"Have you been with the President recently?"

Once certain things became commonplace, voices that should have been full of emotion also grew flat.

Sitting before the vanity and looking at herself in the mirror, Mrs. Chris had been planning to touch up her makeup a little before dinner. Through the mirror's reflection, she looked at her husband. "Not recently. What's wrong?"

Without waiting for her husband to answer, she continued staring at herself in the mirror and began touching up her makeup as she said directly, "I already mentioned your matter to him. He said he'd have to wait until after his reelection."

"He can kick out some of the people his supporters forced into place. That'll leave more positions to arrange for his own people. When the time comes, he'll give you a decent position."
