When a defensive line was breached in war, the defending side wanting to rapidly establish a new one was basically a joke.

Because both the enemy and friendly forces were still on the move, there were only two possibilities for reorganizing the defensive line.

The first was to send troops out to attack in place of defending, temporarily confine the enemy to a certain area, and then build a new defensive line and fortifications outside that area.

The advantage of this approach was that it would not result in too many occupied areas being lost in quick succession. Its disadvantage was that if there were not enough troops to hold the enemy back and establish a regional advantage, it would be difficult to ensure in a short time that the newly built fortifications would be effective.

The second, more common method was to withdraw the troops and build a new defensive line farther away.

The advantage was that there would be plenty of time to build a relatively solid defensive line, but the disadvantage was equally obvious: they would lose a large amount of occupied territory.
