The Federation had seventeen states, and each state had its own complete government structure.

Judicial matters between the states were relatively independent, but they also supported one another.

Simply put, it was a matter of criminals committing crimes across state lines. When necessary, the judicial systems of different states could cooperate.

But sometimes, they operated separately.

For example, when someone waved around a large amount of cash, hoping to exploit interpretations and sentencing provisions for certain crimes under local law to reduce the sentence of a criminal who had committed an offense in another state, or even defend them as innocent, they would consider accepting political donations and then use some minor pretext to request that the criminal be extradited to their state for trial.

The two sides would go through the motions of handing the criminal over, and someone who might originally have been sentenced to death could ultimately be released after only a dozen or so years!

Apart from that, there was very little further cooperation. The Federal Supreme Court and the Department of Justice did not readily take on ordinary cases except when trying cases with especially far-reaching consequences.

Their primary task was maintaining the nationwide judicial system, such as selecting Chief Prosecutors, Deputy Prosecutors, and other candidates for various regions, arranging personnel transfers, and so on.

Nick was a thirty-one-year-old Prosecutor in the prime of his life. He was filled with a sense of justice, had been working for several years, and possessed considerable experience and knowledge.
