They had also taken part in the war against Peng Joe, dispatching their own troops to participate in the landing battle and the subsequent advance.
Many grassroots officers had gained opportunities for promotion because of it, but the generals were hardly pleased.
The Western Military Region had undergone considerable downsizing, and downsizing certainly did not mean casually dismissing officers. It mainly meant cutting ordinary soldiers at the bottom.
That had left the military region somewhat "bloated," because there were too many middle-ranking officers and too few effective positions.
They couldn't very well have several officers command the same unit, could they?
If war broke out or the army needed to be mobilized for a military operation, who exactly would the soldiers listen to?
An army could only ever have one voice, and that voice came from a single superior chief.
The Western Military Region's current approach was to transfer some officers into the militia. The western region had unusual terrain, with all kinds of mountains, forests, ravines, and gullies.
The wilderness was complicated, and incidents of wild beasts injuring people occurred frequently.
Whenever wild beasts appeared and hurt people, clearing them out was assigned to the militia organizations. Since such incidents happened often, they always had more work than they could finish.
Even so, who would be willing to use the rank and status they had fought tooth and nail to obtain in a militia organization? After finally climbing out of the deep pit of war over heaps of corpses and becoming a captain or a major, they were assigned to the militia to serve as a small boss.
No one was willing, but there was nothing they could do about it. That was simply how things were
