Lin Qi did not receive another earnest expression of thanks from Senator Landon until he was leaving. This time, there was no lengthy supporting narration, only one simple word—

Lin Qi patted him on the arm, then returned to his car and left.
If it had been ten years ago, Senator Landon would not have said those words of thanks so casually.
After all, it had been a human life! Back then, he might not have possessed as much power as he did now, nor had he seen the scenery atop the mountain.
He would hardly have killed someone simply because that person had offended him.
He might have punished him or tormented him, but he no longer thought that way.
People behaved differently and held different thoughts at different times. A person who saved lives might, at another time and from another angle, become a killer.
That night, everyone slept soundly and had good dreams.
The next morning, Lin Qi was reading the newspaper when Conner called him.
"If I didn't call you, were you planning not to call me first?"
"Come on, couldn't you at least make me feel like I'm actually important?"
The cheerful tone in those opening words made it difficult for Lin Qi to take them as a complaint. He laughed and explained some of the things that had happened recently.
Calling it an explanation was really just giving both sides a dignified way out—I didn't call you not because you weren't important, but because I was tied up.
In fact, both Lin Qi and Conner knew it was an excuse, but... who cared? Lin Qi had at least put on a perfunctory act, while Conner really did not mind.
