When it came to whether children could be hit, it was a rather interesting matter.

Some active social activists and education experts claimed that hitting children would cast a shadow over their childhoods and affect them for the rest of their lives. They actively pushed for legislation to make "hitting children" a criminal offense.

Many people thought this argument was perfectly correct. Many people campaigned for these voices as well. Children were the future—they could only be educated, never struck. One could not even scold them! Yet strangely enough, many distinguished, well-established families had no interest in such claims. Tutors and whips were probably the memories that accompanied their children through most of their childhoods.

Strict teachers, along with being spanked in front of one's brothers and sisters—that was a truly unpleasant experience.

A careful observation of nature would reveal that when various species were young, especially predators, their parents taught them very strictly how to survive and hunt.

Among certain birds of prey, parents would even throw their chicks off cliffs, passing down the method of teaching them to fly and overcome fear.

By contrast, prey species generally lived more comfortable lives.

Rabbits were the most common example. Rabbit parents did not punish their young for being unable to dig burrows properly or for failing to notice birds of prey flying overhead.

It was quite amazing.

Perhaps this explained why predators had always occupied the upper levels of the food chain. Of course, it might also have been nothing more than a coincidence. After all, human society did not even have a food chain...
