Ch. 61Famous Far and Wide
Summary
Ivette receives a message from Firekeeper inviting her to join the Civilization Preservation Society. The Society believes the Eight Great Companies are “cancer cells” destined to cause civilization’s collapse, though Ivette suspects their conspiracy-based beliefs may not reveal the true source of the apocalypse. As the last survivor of the Origin Civilization, she knows the actual catastrophe was a Mutation Factor contamination that began in the oceans and destroyed land civilization. Nevertheless, she is interested in the Society’s resources and knowledge, so she offers to exchange technical documents in order to build trust and potentially benefit from their preparations.
Afterward, Ivette meets Irene and Tennyson along River Loen. Irene is relieved and amazed that Ivette survived her confrontation with Scale Shedding Organism, while Ivette maintains her confident, mysterious persona. She has already erased evidence of the battle, destroyed the Beast Warriors’ remains, and altered records using Hulett’s identification and terminal access. Her goal is to make Hulett’s disappearance appear to have resulted from an unauthorized experiment and prevent Scale Shedding Organism from tracing the incident back to her.
Ivette uses a spell learned from Hulett to remove the restraints placed on Tennyson, restoring his ability to speak. Tennyson gratefully thanks her, but Ivette reminds him that he must accompany her to the police station so she can claim the one-million-credit bounty. His relief immediately becomes anxiety over his obligations, though he agrees to cooperate.
After completing the police procedures, Ivette earns the bounty, though taxes may reduce it to roughly seven hundred thousand credits. She then hires Welder to create another identity, taking the name “Bingyu Sien” to make it harder for Scale Shedding Organism to connect her to her former identities. She humorously reflects on having claimed to be sixteen for years and decides that she will present herself as twenty in the future.
Over the next several days, Ivette remains in her apartment while searching the dark web for buyers for the semi-liquid Bio-Armor and researching useful purchases. She decides not to buy an expensive Magic Guide Terminal or the overpriced Bio-Armor, preferring to keep her current equipment and possibly steal a better terminal later. Instead, she considers purchasing inexpensive Elemental Chips, which could restore scavenged vehicles and equipment whose chips have been damaged.
The chapter ends when Kaster calls to tell Ivette that she has become a major news story. Her first mercenary assignment resulted in capturing the serial killer Werewolf Killer, exposing Scale Shedding Organism’s plot, and forcing Chairman Old Selles to apologize publicly. Ivette has become famous throughout Agasha and the wider New Eden mercenary world after a single mission.
Character Developments and Interactions
- Ivette: Becomes increasingly strategic and cautious, exploiting organizations for resources while concealing her true motives and identity. She demonstrates compassion by freeing Tennyson but remains practical and transactional about the bounty. Her reputation rapidly grows despite her efforts to remain hidden.
- Firekeeper and the Civilization Preservation Society: Attempt to recruit Ivette, presenting themselves as defenders of civilization. Their ideology contrasts with Ivette’s firsthand knowledge of the apocalypse.
- Irene: Shows genuine concern for Ivette and becomes even more impressed by her abilities after learning that she escaped Scale Shedding Organism alone.
- Tennyson: Is freed from his Beast Warrior restrictions and regains his speech, but must repay Ivette by helping her collect the bounty.
- Scale Shedding Organism: Remains a major threat, but Ivette successfully manipulates the evidence to obscure her involvement.
- Kaster: Acts as Ivette’s intermediary and enthusiastically informs her that her achievements have made her famous.
Major Themes
- Truth versus ideology: Ivette knows the real cause of the apocalypse, while the Civilization Preservation Society relies on a simplified conspiracy theory.
- Survival through secrecy: Ivette repeatedly changes identities, erases evidence, and carefully manages information to protect herself.
- Pragmatism and trust: She is willing to cooperate with questionable groups if their resources are useful, but insists on gradually building trust through transactions.
- Reputation versus anonymity: Although Ivette wants to remain concealed, her successful mission makes her famous across the mercenary world.
- Freedom and exploitation: Tennyson’s liberation is both an act of mercy and part of a practical bargain, reflecting the chapter’s tension between compassion and self-interest.
