Steward Morda had actually broken free of the psychic brainwashing through sheer force of will, leaving both Ian and Sister Reflected Light quite astonished.
Ian had only intended to pry out some information and have the man lead the way. He had never expected this old steward, who normally handled every matter great and small within Layan Castle, to possess such tenacious mental strength that he could escape the false palace constructed by some unknown psychic.

Using the pillar behind him for support, the old steward rose to his feet and leaned against the stone column, drawing deep breaths.
His gray-brown eyes were full of confusion and incomprehension, but he still said slowly, "I remember it all... But, but I truly do not know what exactly the master did."
"These past few years, the master personally handled the young masters' and young ladies' meals. I only occasionally prepared banquets, or brought over snacks and afternoon tea..."
"But I know very well that the master has indeed been extremely strange lately. The young master and young ladies... they were not normal children either..."
"You have suffered enough. Living alongside a vengeful spirit—even if it did not deliberately influence you—would still harm your health."
Ian nodded. Turning around, he headed toward the first floor of the castle. "We came to investigate Baron Layan's involvement with cults, murderous blood sacrifices, and all manner of evil arts."
"I know you do not wish to betray your master, and I do not expect your cooperation."
"But I think you ought to come with us and see what your master has done these past years."
