At several outer sentry posts, the guards made no attempt to conceal themselves. Worse, five or six had abandoned their posts and gathered together to gamble with dice.
They played until their faces were flushed, caught up in the excitement.
Only once in a great while would someone stand and glance into the night outside, without a trace of vigilance on his face.
