The film Freddy vs. Jason had mentioned that Jason feared water because he had drowned, so Dave had prepared a water sphere to deal with him in advance.
Of course, that alone was not enough. Another theory circulating online claimed that Jason did not fear water itself, but the experience of drowning. This theory had plenty of support, since Jason had climbed out of lakes in several of his films.
Thus, after releasing the water sphere, Dave also cast a Fear Spell, forcing Jason to relive the terror of drowning.
