For the time being, the two of them each found a backpack and began filling them with things from the shop, mostly food and drinks for the road. Considering Cheng Yao's small stature, Zhao Tianlei only had her carry a small bag containing some instant noodles and other lightweight food. Zhao Tianlei himself carried a huge backpack stuffed with plenty of food.
Although Zhao Tianlei's Storage Space contained enough food for the two of them to eat for a month without finishing it, he was unwilling to expose his secret before the critical moment arrived. Even though his relationship with Cheng Yao had already gone beyond that of ordinary men and women, people's hearts had grown cold in the apocalypse, and some people could change in an instant. Zhao Tianlei was still unwilling to reveal his trump card and secret to anyone. At the very least, as things stood, no one had earned enough of his trust.
The two of them slept soundly in the little shop for one night. After naturally waking up early the next morning, they found some food to fill their stomachs and then set out. Before leaving, Zhao Tianlei also prepared a weapon for Cheng Yao—a machete. Things were extremely dangerous now, after all, and having one more weapon was far better than being empty-handed.
After confirming that the outside was safe, the two of them opened the security door and slipped out quietly. Throughout the entire operation, they did not alert a single zombie in the surrounding shops, which greatly satisfied Zhao Tianlei. Before leaving, Zhao Tianlei opened the shop's entrance and said, "We ate and drank our fill here yesterday. I imagine many people haven't been able to eat anything for several meals in a row since the apocalypse began. Besides, those zombies don't eat this stuff. Let's leave the door open for the survivors who come after us. Saving one more person is still saving someone."
Cheng Yao said with a smile, "Mm, as expected of my man. You're the best. You really are the kindest person in the world. I'll support you no matter what you do."
Zhao Tianlei looked at her and said irritably, "Tsk, you're really good at flattering people. You're practically coaxing me around in circles."
Cheng Yao pouted. "What? Every word I said came straight from my heart. You should know that apart from you, I wouldn't flatter any other man even if he begged me to."
And so, the two of them continued forward, chatting and laughing, until they were nearing the urban district. Only then did they put away their playful attitudes. After all, the closer they got to the city center, the more dangerous it became. No one knew how many zombies had gathered inside.
Looking at the cars abandoned all over both sides of the street, Zhao Tianlei said to Cheng Yao, "Cheng Yao, do you know how to drive? Why don't we find a car? If we keep walking, our stamina will eventually be exhausted. Besides, driving should be relatively safer. If we run into a Zombie Horde, we can just turn around and flee."
Cheng Yao said, "Drive? I did get my license last month, but I've never driven on a main road. At most, I've driven around the outskirts or on the ring roads."
"That's good. You're better than me. I've only touched a car once, and I almost drove myself sick." With that, Zhao Tianlei carried his ax toward the cars by the roadside. All those so-called luxury cars that were usually the pride of their owners had been abandoned there.
Suddenly, Cheng Yao pointed at an SUV in the distance and said, "Tianlei, let's pick that SUV. It has good visibility and should be steadier to drive, so it won't overturn easily. Its power is also better than that of ordinary sedans."
"Mm, you're right. Let's take that one." As he spoke, the two of them walked straight over.
When he got closer, Zhao Tianlei realized that it was a Porsche Cayenne, an absolutely luxurious car. One side of the door had already been opened, and there was a little blood inside. Clearly, the owner had encountered some danger while driving and abandoned the car to escape.
After his previous experience of opening a car door on the school field and being knocked down by a zombie, Zhao Tianlei was extremely cautious this time. Only after confirming that there was no danger did he walk straight toward the front passenger seat, while Cheng Yao climbed into the driver's seat without hesitation.
Seeing that the key was still in place, Cheng Yao shut the door and turned it. The car immediately gave a soft click and started successfully. The two of them exchanged smiles.
After the car started, Zhao Tianlei emphasized to Cheng Yao, "Don't go directly into the city. We'll follow this Third Ring Road. If we encounter anyone calling for help along the way, we'll lend a hand. If there's no one, then forget it. Our goal is to save people, but we can't sacrifice ourselves in the process."
"Okay, let's go." With that, Cheng Yao stepped on the accelerator and sped forward. Surprisingly, although Cheng Yao was a novice driver, she drove the car quite steadily.
Perhaps because they were in the suburbs along the Third Ring Road, the two of them drove much faster along the way, and most importantly, they encountered no major obstacles. They did often come across cars abandoned at random, though, and had to weave through them carefully. Cheng Yao was unwilling to simply ram into them, since the rebound from such an impact was extremely unpleasant.
Just as they were about to enter the Second Ring Road from the Third Ring Road, three people suddenly appeared in the distance ahead—two men and one woman, to be precise. They were clearly survivors fleeing the disaster. When they saw a car approaching, they hurriedly stood in the middle of the road and waved.
Cheng Yao immediately asked, "Tianlei, there are three people stopping the car ahead. They look like survivors. Should we stop and give them a ride?"
Zhao Tianlei said solemnly, "Mm, drive over slowly, and lock the doors first. I'll roll down the window on my side and check the situation. If they're bad people, we'll drive straight on. If there's no problem, we'll give them a ride. After all, in the apocalypse, simply staying alive is already extremely difficult."
"Okay, we'll do as you say." Cheng Yao immediately locked all the doors and windows, leaving only the passenger-side window slightly open for Zhao Tianlei. As they approached the three people, Cheng Yao reduced the car's speed to the absolute minimum. The car only came to a slow stop once it reached them. Following Zhao Tianlei's warning, however, Cheng Yao did not turn off the engine. If anything seemed wrong, they could immediately drive away.
When the car stopped in front of the three people, they immediately came forward and tried to pull open the doors, only to discover that they were locked from the inside. The three of them froze. One of the women quickly walked to the passenger-side window and said to Zhao Tianlei inside, "Handsome, open the door and let us in. We barely escaped with our lives. You wouldn't really refuse to save us, would you? Are you really going to stand by and watch us get bitten to death by those zombies?"
As she pleaded, Zhao Tianlei began sizing up the three of them. Their clothes aside, they all looked somewhat like street thugs, and their expressions were cold as well. They were at least a few years older than him, the sort of young men and women who had been out in society for a while. Still, Zhao Tianlei knew he could not judge people solely by their appearances, so he asked, "Who are you three? Are you together? Why are you here?"
"Handsome, what time is this? You're still interrogating us? Let your big sister into the car first, okay? Once we're inside, you can interrogate us however you want, all right? I'm scared to death out here. Who knows when those zombies might come running out?"
