Likewise, they formed a deadly temptation for insects that possessed neither knowledge nor awareness, with even their instincts reduced to nothing but spreading and propagating.
Piercing cries rose in wave after wave.
Within the swamp concealed beneath dense vegetation, amid countless rotting snakes, insects, rats, and ants, moths that had been constantly rising and falling abruptly beat their wings and soared into the air.
Like countless streams of earthly ash rising into the sky, they gathered together in cluster after cluster, becoming a savage great river that writhed wildly through the heavens.
Amid the shrill buzzing of wings, the wildly dancing gray river swept forth.
But then, it halted in mid-air.
As if frozen.

As though someone had waved a hand absentmindedly.

It was as though an invisible palm had swept across the sky, wiping away every stain and speck of dust, erasing the gray river from this world from beginning to end. Only the endless, overlapping crackles of tiny explosions continued to spread.
In that brief instant, Isis's observation had already locked on to every moth dancing within the gray river. Then, innumerable threads of mercury tore through the air. Fine strands too small for the naked eye to perceive intertwined with one another, piercing every moth from beginning to end with living precision and weaving
