Background & History
Skar commands a Flaming Fist squad based in a fortified residence with its own training ground. He is already acquainted with Banterley Mirrorimage, whom he has known for over ten years. 13 26
When Zhang Yuan seeks to join the squad, Skar accepts him despite his being only a level-one mage. He explains that rootless wandering mages are more likely to take mercenary work than established mages, then brings Zhang into the team’s base. 13
Skar personally evaluates Zhang’s strength, speed, endurance, and swordsmanship. Recognizing Zhang’s poor formal training but unusual endurance and combat intuition, he takes an active role in teaching him close-combat fundamentals, evasion, and the life-saving technique called Roll. 14 17
He leads his squad on the Flaming Fist’s mission to investigate attacks on ore convoys traveling from Nashkel. After witnessing a convoy massacre orchestrated by Black Claw mercenaries and goblins, Skar orders a retreat rather than sacrifice his outmatched unit. 17 37
Skar later reports the squad’s findings and suspicions regarding the Iron Throne to Grand Duke Iltan. Although he urges a campaign into Sharp Tooth Forest, Iltan rejects the proposal for lack of proof and concern over stretching Flaming Fist forces too thin. 48 49
Personality
Skar is straightforward, practical, and inclined to make decisions quickly. He judges recruits by what they can contribute rather than imposing fixed expectations, but he also expects discipline and hard work from everyone under his command. 13 15
His mentoring style mixes teasing with blunt honesty. He jokes at Zhang’s expense, punctures his inflated expectations as a mage, and pushes him through demanding training, yet consistently provides constructive guidance and recognizes his progress. 14 16 17
Skar values courage as a deliberate response to fear rather than fearlessness. When Zhang doubts himself before the Nashkel expedition, Skar emphasizes Zhang’s potential as a Fighter and urges him to face the danger ahead. 18
He can be impulsive and visibly angered by corruption or setbacks, particularly during the Nashkel investigation. However, he is capable of pragmatic restraint when a direct fight would endanger his team. 35 36 37 48

“Justice from Above”
Skar’s preferred unconventional tactic combines Tiny’s Throw skill with his own shielded landing.
- Tiny throws Skar onto a kobold-held cliff, where Skar’s impact creates a shockwave that knocks down the defenders. 34
- Skar proposes making the maneuver a regular tactic and names it “Justice from Above.” 34
- Its use is limited by Tiny’s mana recovery and ability availability. 34
