"All right, we'll leave the matter of someone playing games in class at that. Let it serve as a warning to everyone."
Li Na had been in a meeting that afternoon when the Student Union posted its inspection results in the group chat. Bored, she opened the spreadsheet and saw that someone had been playing games, along with a high-resolution photo. She was absolutely furious.
They'd barely been in class for any time at all, and already this was happening. What made Li Na even angrier was that now every counselor knew someone in 21 Software Class had been using their phone and playing games during class.
At the back of the classroom, Yang Wenzhao and Zhang Huizhen exchanged a smile. Every class went through this; if no one said anything, no one would ever suspect that Student Union members could photograph students in class in a room with both doors closed and no cameras.
Still, Yang Wenzhao and Zhang Huizhen could understand why Na Jie was so angry. Students in every class were occasionally caught using their phones, but there weren't many who had actually been photographed playing games.
Li Na took a deep breath and composed herself before beginning today's class meeting topic: choosing the class officers.
"You've all been together for a while now. Since we have time today, we'll vote to choose our class officers."
"According to the usual rules, there are eight positions: class monitor, deputy class monitor, League Branch Secretary, Study Committee Member, Discipline Committee Member, Sports Committee Member, Life Committee Member, and Psychological Committee Member."
"The class monitor is in charge of the class's overall work."
"The deputy class monitor assists the class monitor."
"The League Branch Secretary is responsible for the class's ideological and League-related work."
"The Study Committee Member handles academic matters, including collecting the homework assigned by our teachers."
"The Discipline Committee Member is, as you can guess, responsible for discipline in class."
"I don't need to explain the roles of the Sports Committee Member and Life Committee Member. The last one, the Psychological Committee Member, may be new to some of you. They'll be responsible for mental health education for the whole class, keeping an eye on everyone's psychological well-being, and receiving guidance from the college's Mental Health Education Center."
Li Na clapped her hands. "All right, everyone take out a piece of paper and write down three names. Vote for the people you'd like to serve as class officers. You can write down fewer than three names, but not more. You may vote for yourself, but you can't write the same name more than once."
"Get to it. Once you've made up your mind, write your choices down. I know you all want to get back to your dorms. Once we've chosen the officers, you can leave."
Mo Jingchun was pretty shrewd. He hadn't forgotten what Yang Wenzhao had told him last time, so he'd brought a notebook and a black gel pen when he left home.
Of course, plenty of other students had brought pens and paper too. Only a few hadn't.
"If you didn't bring a pen and paper, borrow some from another student. Remember to bring them next time we have a class meeting so you can take notes. Otherwise, two days after the meeting, you won't remember anything I said."
Mo Jingchun paid no attention to his little sister Candy's chubby hand feeling his Adam's apple. After thinking it over, he wrote three names on a torn-off sheet of white paper.
His first choice was, unsurprisingly, Yang Xiaoyu, the current acting class monitor. During this time, Yang Xiaoyu had earned the approval of most of the class.
For his second choice, Mo Jingchun wrote down Li Xuanyu. She had excellent grades and was a good student, so there didn't seem to be anything wrong with making her Study Committee Member.
As for his last choice, Mo Jingchun wrote down Zhou Huiling. She was the student who smiled the most in the class.
All three were girls. It wasn't that Mo Jingchun was biased; he'd simply interacted more with the girls in his class because of his little sister, Candy, and knew them a little better. Since he didn't live in the dorms, he had no contact with the boys outside of class.
Mo Jingchun folded the paper with his choices on it and placed it at the corner of his desk.
A few minutes later, Li Na nodded to Yang Wenzhao and Zhang Huizhen at the back of the classroom.
Starting from the back and working their way forward, Zhang Huizhen and Yang Wenzhao collected everyone's papers and gathered them together.
Zhang Huizhen quickly counted twice. There were 43 in all, with two still missing.
Before Zhang Huizhen could say anything, two students brought their papers up.
"To ensure fairness and impartiality, I'll have your senior Zhang Huizhen read out the votes, and your senior Yang Wenzhao tally them."
"Go ahead."
At Na Jie's instruction, Yang Wenzhao and Zhang Huizhen exchanged a knowing look and nodded.
"One vote for Yang Xiaoyu."
"One vote for Zhang Hewei."
"One vote for Zhou Huiling."
After reading out the last ballot, Zhang Huizhen stepped down from the platform and stood by the wall in the corner, while Yang Wenzhao turned the tally marks into numbers.
Judging by the results on the blackboard, Yang Xiaoyu had won the most votes by far, with 44, and was now officially the class monitor.
As for the one missing vote, Yang Xiaoyu had probably chosen not to vote for herself.
The one thing that surprised Mo Jingchun was that Zhou Huiling had gotten two more votes than Li Xuanyu.
As expected, girls who smiled were popular everywhere, especially in a science-and-engineering class where there were far more boys than girls.
Mo Jingchun rubbed his nose awkwardly. He had no idea which rascal had voted for him, making his name one of many on the blackboard with only a single vote.
If more than a dozen other students hadn't also received just one vote, Mo Jingchun would've been mortified.
"All right, the eight class officers and two acting class monitors we just chose should stay for a brief meeting. Everyone else can go back to the dorms."
After Mo Jingchun and the others left the classroom, Li Na gathered the class officers, explained their responsibilities and how to carry out their work, then announced their first task.
"The financial aid selection for students from low-income families is coming up. There are 45 students in our class, and the school has allocated eight spots to us. Class monitor, when you get back tonight, post a notice in the group chat for the whole class. Anyone who needs the aid should submit an application explaining why they're applying and their circumstances."
"Also, the eight spots are divided into three tiers: one top-tier grant of 4,000 yuan; two mid-tier grants of 3,000 yuan each; and five general grants of 2,000 yuan each."
After thinking for a moment, Li Na said:
"When you get back, keep an eye on everyone's spending habits. Do your best to make sure the aid goes to students who genuinely need it."
"Once everyone has submitted their applications, the eleven of us, along with one student from each dorm who didn't apply, will form a group to review them. In the end, the acting class monitors and I will choose the recipients."
As if she'd just remembered something, Li Na added, "If any of you need the aid, you can submit an application too. But anyone who applies won't be allowed to take part in the review meeting."
