The Town Watch APP had a very simple interface, with just four sections: Tasks, Store, Chat, and Profile.
Lu Siye opened his profile and saw his personal information.
Name: Lu Siye Identity: Probationary Member of the Tianhai City Town Demon Suppression Division Strength: Night Patrol Envoy Record: Killed one low-level Evil Ghost Points: 136
The higher a member's rank, the more items they could buy in the store, and the greater their access to information about ghosts.
The Town Demon Suppression Division ranked strength according to the levels of the ghosts its members could face.
Among the ghosts ordinary members encountered, strength was classified from lowest to highest as Vengeful Ghost, Evil Ghost, Fierce Ghost, Blood-Clad Fierce Ghost, and Malevolent Soul.
The corresponding levels for human cultivators were, from lowest to highest, Probationary Member, Night Patrol Envoy, Night Wanderer Envoy, Day Wanderer Envoy, and Grandmaster.
Moreover, the Town Demon Suppression Division didn't assess members' strength by their personal cultivation level, but by their record.
The highest-level ghost a person could kill determined their strength rank.
That was why Lu Siye had been ranked as a Night Patrol Envoy, even though he hadn't begun cultivating when he joined the Town Demon Suppression Division and had no cultivation at all.
A member's strength rank determined the difficulty of the tasks they could accept.
To keep members safe, the Town Demon Suppression Division didn't allow them to take on tasks above their rank, except in special circumstances.
As for a member's record, it meant exactly what it sounded like, so there was no need to explain further.
Points could be used to purchase items in the Town Watch APP store. Everyone who joined the Town Demon Suppression Division received 100 points to start with, while the additional 36 points were Lu Siye's reward for killing the Takeout Ghost.
After confirming the highest-ranked tasks he could accept, Lu Siye began searching for one in the Tasks section.
{Midnight Footsteps!} Recently, several overtime workers had gone missing from the Haitian Building, Shengtian Building, Qianhai Building, and other locations around Tianhai City. After investigating and questioning people, the public security officers found that all the missing people had the following in common: 1. They had mentioned over the phone or on WeChat that they'd heard strange footsteps while working late at night. 2. No property was missing from their homes, and no useful evidence, such as fingerprints or hair, had been found at the scenes. 3. They had all gone missing at night, while alone. The Tianhai City Public Security Bureau reported these cases to the Tianhai City Town Demon Suppression Division, which had tentatively determined after investigation that a Fierce Ghost was responsible. Anyone accepting this task must be at least a Night Wanderer Envoy!
When Lu Siye saw that the paranormal incidents had been caused by a Fierce Ghost, he immediately swiped past the task.
Only cultivators at the Night Wanderer Envoy level or higher could contend with a Fierce Ghost.
Lu Siye was currently only a Night Patrol Envoy. If he ran into a Fierce Ghost, he'd be dead before he knew it.
{The Moving Bound Spirit!} Recently, passengers had gone missing around midnight in various districts across Tianhai City. According to surveillance footage examined by the Tianhai City Public Security Bureau, all the missing people had the following in common: 1. They had all gone missing at around midnight, and each had been alone. 2. They had all gotten into a red Porsche 911 with the license plate number *******, just before disappearing. The Tianhai City Public Security Bureau discovered that the vehicle had crashed on a mountain road a week earlier and reported it to the Town Demon Suppression Division. After tracking it down, the Town Demon Suppression Division determined that the incident had been caused by a special Bound Spirit Evil Ghost. The ghost couldn't leave its vehicle, but within the area it was bound to, its strength could reach the highest level of an Evil Ghost. The ghost could also automatically identify the strength of anyone trying to hail a ride. Cultivators above the Night Patrol Envoy level couldn't encounter it through a ride-hailing app. All cultivators accepting this task were advised to proceed with extreme caution.
Lu Siye rubbed his chin, weighed his options for a moment, and ultimately chose to accept the task, "The Moving Bound Spirit!"
He had two reasons for choosing it:
First, although Bound Spirits were stronger within the areas they were bound to, they couldn't leave those areas. So as long as he didn't enter its territory, he'd be safe.
Second, he hated luxury cars and supercars!
The quiet street was dotted with a few dim streetlights.
Cicadas sang in the trees lining the street, and the cool summer breeze swept fallen leaves into a dance through the deserted night.
Under a dim streetlight in the middle of the street, a cheerful-looking young man leaned against the post with his head bowed, scrolling on his phone.
That man was Lu Siye.
He was using a ride-hailing app, repeatedly switching between drivers in hopes of finding the red Porsche 911.
"Hey, kid, I've got something exciting here. Want to come take a look?"
Suddenly, a balding middle-aged man called out to him from the entrance of a nearby alley across the street, beckoning him over.
A small cart stood beside the man, piled with all kinds of discs.
The entire alley was pitch-black, with only a little light coming from the disc seller's cart.
Lu Siye froze for a moment, then gave a mysterious smile and walked over to the middle-aged man.
"Hey, man, what year is it? Why are you still selling discs out here?"
Lu Siye reached the cart, picked up a disc titled "Journey to the West," and glanced at it as he asked casually.
"You don't know the business. The stuff on my discs is pretty exciting—perfect for watching alone late at night."
The disc seller glanced around, making sure no one was nearby, then spoke to him. A knowing smile spread across his face.
"How exciting are we talking?" Lu Siye gave him a knowing smile, too.
"I've got a little projector here. I can give you a three-minute preview. What do you say?" The disc seller raised his eyebrows at him.
"Then what are we waiting for? Hurry up!" Lu Siye called out, unable to contain his excitement.
"Shh! Keep your voice down!"
The disc seller signaled for Lu Siye to keep quiet, then pulled another disc from beneath the cart.
He put it in the projector, and faint sounds began to play.
The scene on the disc was intense from the very beginning.
A man and a woman fought at close quarters as if they had a blood feud. Sweat and blood sprayed through the air as they glared at each other, eyes blazing red, and roared with fury, determined to kill.
The three-minute preview was soon over. The disc seller stopped the projector right on time, removed the disc, and carefully put it away as if it were a treasure.
"Well?" The disc seller raised his eyebrows at him again.
"I'll take it!"
Lu Siye came back to himself, pointed at the disc he'd just watched, and declared firmly.
"This is my most precious one, so it won't come cheap. You'd better think it over, kid." The disc seller gave him a sinister smile.
"How expensive could it be? I'll take it." Lu Siye's resolve didn't waver.
