Background & History

Gu Cheng transmigrated into the body of a Demon Suppression Bureau officer whose prior cultivation consisted chiefly of Raging Bull Fist, Iron Cutting Blade Technique, and Wind Chasing Steps. He immediately relied on a status panel that converts lifespan into cultivation progress, spending years of simulated practice to improve the Iron Cutting Blade Technique from Proficient to Perfection while retaining only seven years of lifespan. 1

He rebuilt his strength by killing demons for lifespan, beginning with the Earth Armor Pig Demon’s son and the bandits who aided it. The battle produced his first decisive ultimate move, One Blade Asura. 6 He later chose the demanding Hundred Refinements of the Azure Dragon from the Changle County Armory despite being warned that ordinary cultivators might require a century merely to begin it. 15

His cultivation developed unevenly but exceptionally: Body Refinement and Spirit Refinement reached the Mortal Breaking Realm long before his Qi Refinement formed a Qi Sea. This made him a “level-stuck expert” whose real combat power far exceeded the realm others could perceive. 49

Appearance

Gu Cheng is a tall, straight-backed young man with an exceptionally handsome face, deep black eyes, and an ordinarily composed expression. He is frequently seen in black clothing or the dark-blue uniform of the Demon Suppression Bureau. 8 204

  • His eyes gain a concentrated divine light after major Spirit Refinement breakthroughs. 49
  • He often carries the black saber Ink Feather at his waist. 59
  • His Blood Kirin identity uses a black robe and bronze mask while wielding a blood-colored saber. 133
  • Bone-Melding Shapeshifting can alter his face, physique, posture, and voice; he has used it to become an ordinary middle-aged man. 153

Personality

Gu Cheng is pragmatic and relentlessly focused on self-improvement. When political threats, demon kings, the Rebirth Sect, and local feuds converge in Changle County, he reduces the problem to its core principle: become stronger, kill threats, and use lifespan to advance. 32

He is observant and difficult to intimidate. His assessment of Centurion Zhao’s calligraphy accurately identified the agitation in Zhao’s state of mind, earning the centurion’s admiration. 37 In combat, he is calm even against stronger enemies, rapidly identifying weaknesses such as Jiao Wushang’s defensive reflection or the limitations of an enemy’s demon servant. 93 105

His compassion is selective. He aids allies, repays favors, protects Tang Lingyu when she is injured, and intends to leave Xiao Yun enough merit to succeed him in Changle County. 114 64 Conversely, he is ruthless toward demons, hostile sects, and witnesses he considers dangerous, ordering Xiao Yun to erase Zhao Jin Nian and his associates after their attempted flight. 20

Abilities & Skills

Lifespan-Based Cultivation

Gu Cheng’s status panel allows him to invest lifespan into martial arts, cultivation methods, comprehension, and refinement.

  • Killing demons and cultivators replenishes his lifespan; the Earth Armor Pig Demon alone granted 136 years. 6
  • He uses accumulated lifespan to overcome techniques whose aptitude requirements would normally be prohibitive, including Hundred Refinements of the Azure Dragon. 15 16
  • He regards himself as his own inheritance, using personal lifespan to surpass the accumulated legacies of established sects. 82
  • His method depends on having lifespan available; repeated large-scale deductions and refinement consume centuries at a time. 16 210

Blade and Sword Arts

Gu Cheng is primarily a close-combat weapons specialist, capable of adapting both orthodox and demonic blade arts.

  • Iron Cutting Blade Technique / One Blade Asura — His foundational Bureau technique reached Ultimate Intent and became a one-strike killing art empowered by Blood Essence. 1 6
  • Wind Thunder Blade Technique / Lightning Cyclone Slash — Combines lightning, wind intent, and saber force; Lightning Cyclone Slash killed the transformed Blood Lady in one strike. 16 20
    • The bare-handed version places severe strain on his body and can only be used once. 20
    • Its wind-and-thunder insight also lets him magnetize and remotely control metal weapons. 20
  • Blood Shadow Blade Technique / Greedy Wolf Blood Blade — A self-created Mortal Breaking blade art combining Iron Cutting Blade Technique, blood manipulation, and demonic aura. 33
    • It synergizes with his life-bound Blood Blade and can surpass his normal limits when sufficient blood is available. 33
  • Dragon Slaying Sword Art — His strongest sword technique at the time he mastered it; he learned it in less than a month and used it to kill three Innate Realm Dragon Martial Hall elders. 149 151
    • Its strongest execution consumes substantial true qi and divine sense without a life-bound magic sword. 151

Blood Blade Scripture and Physical Transformation

By reverse-cultivating the Blood Blade Scripture, Gu Cheng gains a life-bound Blood Blade and a sequence of body-refinement powers.

  • Blood Blade — A dark-red blood saber formed from blood malevolence and linked to his mind. It withstands Wind Thunder Blade Technique better than ordinary weapons and increases the power of its ultimate move. 22
  • Indestructible Demon Physique — Covers his body in Dark Blood Demonic Armor, drastically enhancing strength, defense, and Blood Manipulation Secret Art. 61
    • The transformation is energy-intensive and short-lived without fuel. 67
    • It can replenish itself by draining demon blood through the life-bound blood weapon. 67
  • Undying Asura Body — A more advanced body-refinement art with defensive traits comparable to the Diamond Glazed Body. 186
    • It grants resistance to soul-hooking effects, allowing him to escape the Wuchang Ghost Lock. 201
    • Its potential is sufficient to contend with Spirit Sea Realm experts once perfected. 186

Thunder, Water, and Elemental Arts

Gu Cheng combines physical combat with techniques that are especially effective against demons and armored enemies.

  • Crimson Palace Heavenly Thunder Incantation / Blood Kirin’s Wrath — A thunder art that annihilated Zheng Tianlu, the Innate Realm Corpse King, without leaving remains. 68
    • Its appearance and power are associated with the Blood Kirin persona. 133
    • Thunder Law strongly suppresses demons and Demon Servants. 104
  • Water Control — Acquired through demon-core refinement; he can manifest giant water snakes and neutralize enemy water manipulation. 92 104
  • Yin Yang Absolute Immortal Hand — An Innate Realm palm art whose Yin Hand bypasses defensive strength, treating heavy armor as fragile material. 81
    • The Yang Hand is a healing application, but initially required a condensed Qi Sea before it could be cultivated fully. 81 110
  • Blazing Flame Fire / Azure Flame Sword Qi — Fuses four distinct flames into a high-level fire art. 225
    • Gu Cheng believes its sword qi can let him remain undefeated against Spirit Sea Flood Dragons or Half-demon Venerables even without his Flood Dragon Demon Servant. 225

Spirit Refinement and Divine Abilities

Gu Cheng’s divine sense supports combat, detection, refinement, and stealth.

  • Heavenly Sound Mind Nurturing Technique — A Spirit Refinement method that developed his divine sense to Mortal Breaking Realm and later beyond. 49 72
  • Withered Wood Dragon’s Roar — Its music amplifies his divine sense and can awaken sealed Demon Servants within Venerable Qinglian’s treasury. 146 160
  • Qi Gazing — Detects hidden auras and exposed several nearby Innate Realm Great Demons. 180
  • Blood Melting Furnace / Blood Transformation — Refines demon corpses into usable energy, improving his cultivation and extracting maximum value from slain foes. 124 160
  • Spring Return — A regenerative divine ability gained from the Willow God’s Demon Core; it offsets the ongoing damage of powerful toxins. 174
  • Sky Breaking — A divine ability comprehended after enduring Jiao Potian’s demonic-aura illusion during sword-horn refinement. 210

Demon Servants

Gu Cheng pursues Demon Servant refinement as part of his long-term Spirit Refinement path.

  • Jiao Potian — His Flood Dragon Demon Servant, strengthened through repeated refinement and Innate Demon Cores to Spirit Sea Middle Stage. 180
  • Four Spirits True Intent — A growth-oriented technique requiring four Spirit Sea Realm Demon Servants, giving Gu Cheng a prospective path toward the Mystic Core Realm. 164 184
  • His current refinement approach is resource-intensive; even extensive hunting and refinement only advanced Jiao Potian partway through the required stages. 180

Disguise and Concealment

Gu Cheng protects his identity through layered physical and spiritual deception.

  • Bone-Melding Shapeshifting — Alters his appearance, body shape, and voice. 153
  • Hidden Origin Art — Conceals his aura through divine sense and prevents ordinary Qi Gazing techniques from exposing his disguise. 201
  • Combined, these techniques let him approach powerful Spirit Refinement cultivators without detection. 243

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Ink Feather — A black saber approximately three feet and three inches long, nearly fifty catties in weight, and made from an unusually hard yet flexible material. 59
  • Blood Blade — A life-bound blood weapon formed through the reverse-cultivated Blood Blade Scripture. 22
  • Withered Wood Dragon’s Roar — Ancient zither that amplifies divine sense and interacts with Venerable Qinglian’s sealed Demon Servants. 146 160
  • Pagoda Slayer Saber — Saber used during his battle with Evil King Pavilion’s Ninth Destiny. 194
  • Flood Dragon Horse — His mount; Gu Cheng shows concern for its welfare despite the attention it attracts. 153
  • Flood Dragon sword horn — Refined over thousands of lifespan-years and used as a source of powerful sword energy. 210 217

Relationships

  • Xu Nianxue — Close associate and cultivation contact. Gu Cheng regularly provides her meals, while Xu Nianxue offers techniques, guidance, and gifts before returning to Yunzhou City. 37 79
  • Tang Lingyu — Fellow Demon Suppression Bureau cultivator, sparring partner, and friend. They exchange cultivation insights; Gu Cheng helps treat her father and later protects her from Li Yunhe. 108 110 114
  • Xiao Yun — Former subordinate whose initial disdain became loyalty and respect after witnessing Gu Cheng’s strength. Gu Cheng plans for Xiao Yun to inherit his Changle County position. 12 20 64
  • Xu Wenying — Senior Bureau figure who supports Gu Cheng, warns him to keep a low profile, and trusts his potential. 139 206
  • Cao Jianxin — One-armed swordsman and ally whom Gu Cheng once saved while disguised as a Demon Hunter. 84 94
  • Su Jiuer — Former Ninth Destiny of the Evil King Pavilion. Gu Cheng killed her, acquired knowledge from her remnant soul, and later gained the service of her weapon spirit. 194 201 209
  • Jiao Potian — Flood Dragon Demon Servant refined and strengthened by Gu Cheng. 180 210
  • Li Longxiang — Dragon Martial Hall Master and adversary connected to the pursuit of Venerable Qinglian’s inheritance. 139 152

Story Role / Major Arcs

Changle County Officer

Gu Cheng rises from a low-level Demon Suppression Bureau officer by hunting demons, gathering lifespan, and mastering techniques beyond his apparent realm. He kills the Earth Armor Pig Demon’s son, selects Hundred Refinements of the Azure Dragon, and becomes a Banner Chief able to earn Merit Points through more dangerous missions. 6 10 15

He protects Shopkeeper Song’s wife from a flower thief in exchange for medicinal ingredients, demonstrating his willingness to turn social connections into cultivation resources. 38 During the Changle County crisis, he adopts the Blood Kirin disguise and destroys Zheng Tianlu, the Innate Realm Corpse King. 68

Tianshui Prefecture Prodigy

After leaving Changle County, Gu Cheng enters the wider Demon Suppression Bureau environment and becomes known for his extreme versatility. He defeats Chen Fengyi by breaking his life-bound magic sword with Yin Yang Absolute Immortal Hand, then defeats Chu Yuntian’s Ox Ghost through Water Control and Thunder Law. 103 105

His rapid ascent prompts others to attribute his strength to Venerable Qinglian’s legacy, an explanation Gu Cheng tacitly accepts because it conceals the truth of his lifespan-based cultivation. 222

Dragon Martial Hall and Qinglian’s Legacy

Gu Cheng seeks the Withered Wood Dragon’s Roar, learns Dragon Slaying Sword Art, and becomes entangled in Dragon Martial Hall’s pursuit of Venerable Qinglian’s second inheritance. 146 152 He kills three pursuing Innate Realm elders, obtains their possessions, and uses Bone-Melding Shapeshifting to erase evidence and move freely. 151 153

At Falling Star Lake, he discovers Venerable Qinglian’s underground treasury, awakens sealed Demon Servants through zither music, and obtains major treasures including a Spirit Sea Flood Dragon Demon Core and the Diamond Glazed Body method. 160 164

Chongshan County Demon Hunt

Using intelligence from Shen Ruyan, Gu Cheng treats Chongshan County as a hunting ground, killing dozens of Innate Realm Great Demons. He converts their lifespan, bodies, and Demon Cores into advancement for himself and Jiao Potian. 180

His campaigns include destroying the Poison Spider Society, killing Xue Dingshan, and using Spring Return to overcome Corpse Rot Poison. 174 By this stage, his physical cultivation reaches the peak of the Innate Realm. 184

Trivia

  • Gu Cheng is an accomplished cook; Tang Lingyu and Chu Tianyin both praise his food, and he enjoys the satisfaction of feeding others. 134 222
  • He can assess calligraphy well enough to identify the instability in Centurion Zhao’s state of mind from a single character. 37
  • His Blood Kirin identity is publicly wanted by the Demon Suppression Bureau, which offers major rewards for its identification—without realizing Blood Kirin is Gu Cheng. 133
  • He describes his combat competence as being “good at everything, a little bit of everything,” a claim his allies later conclude was not an exaggeration. 86 94
