The temperature on the Holy Spirit Plains plummeted tonight. It was as if an invisible, frigid wind swept across this cursed wilderness, stealing away a little of the warmth from the active abominations and delivering an ominous warning.
Unfortunately, the Chaos creatures that roamed this tainted land couldn't understand such an obscure warning.
Those bizarre things continued racing across the scorched earth, searching in vain for lives that had never been hiding there.
Chaos creatures might not need to eat in the Warp. The foul power churned up by every wave in the Sea of Chaos might be enough to sate them. But in the material world, they couldn't draw on that stinking warp energy. No matter how grotesquely twisted they were, they still had to obey some of the rules that governed physical creatures. For example, they had to eat.
When they couldn't find food or another source of energy, these twisted abominations often went dormant to reduce the strain on their bodies. Thus, the ruins of the razed towns were mostly inhabited by low-level abominations, naturally spawned by Chaos corruption. If some unlucky soul wandered in, the slumbering horrors would soon awaken, and another massacre would begin.
But tonight was different.
The abominations slumbering in the tainted land seemed to catch the scent of food. One after another, they awoke, moving their strange bodies as they crawled out of their lairs. Their keen senses searched for prey, but they found no living creatures—only the dried, weathered bones scattered around them.
They had come to life!
They rose from pits where severed limbs had been carelessly discarded, climbed out of the ashes, or pushed their way through the soil of mass graves.
Skeletons and zombies marched onward, dragging their broken, shambling bodies. Some wielded crude bone blades; others simply
