The Rending Claw Clan had lost another warlord.
And not just any warlord, but a high-ranking front-line grand warlord. Counting Hurley, the warlord of the Death Plateau, and the one who had died in Plague Valley, the gnolls' opening to the Black Calamity seemed "less than perfect." And this was only half a month into the calamity, with the fighting nowhere near its peak.
In the past, losses like these would have been enough to disrupt the Black Calamity's progress. But this time, the gnolls seemed to have come prepared.
When the failure of the full-scale assault on Blackflame Pass returned to the Rending Claw Clan's headquarters with the fleeing soldiers, Matriarch Botana had no particular comment to offer.
As if none of it was worth her attention.
In truth, that was exactly the case.
Blackflame Pass had repelled the gnolls' ferocious attack, but in reality, the gnolls had withdrawn from Position One of their own accord at the last moment. Their fifty thousand vanguard gnolls had suffered losses of no more than a fifth. Most of their main force had been preserved, and under the leadership of the lower-ranking warlords, they returned to the main army.
The kobold auxiliaries had suffered horrific casualties, but the problem was that the gnolls didn't count how many kobolds had died. They didn't have the brains to accurately tally their losses, and besides, even the kobolds themselves didn't care much about such losses.
Accidents and death were simply part of life for those ignorant creatures.
They weren't much given to complaining, either. After all, even the kobold elders thought their people were too numerous to manage. A little "dying off" was good for the tribe's development.
Once all the fools were dead, the superior genes could carry on.
Generation after generation, one day
