The Voodoo priests of the Rending Claw clan were skilled at casting meteor spells, but that didn't mean they were equally skilled at casting earthquakes.
Although both were high-tier spells in the earth-psionic system, their casting principles differed considerably. Gnolls had no natural talent for wielding earth psionics, and the Voodoo curses they excelled at couldn't strengthen them in that regard.
Thus, even though the Rending Claw matriarch's spellcasters poured all their efforts into shaking Blackflame Pass, they could only extend the earthquake's reach to the fifth defensive line before they ran out of steam.
The earth priests under Lord Hessa reacted with incredible speed.
These dwarves, truly beloved by the earth, quickly used spells to stop the ground from splitting further. They also began repairing the ruptured terrain and tried to use earth magic to collapse the ratmen's tunnels, preventing those hideous creatures from spreading through the chaotic first third of the defensive lines.
However, the gnolls' attack followed almost perfectly.
While the earth priests were trying to seal the underground passages, Grand Warlord Hugerson had already led his excited gnoll army sweeping in. The shattered ground couldn't stop the swift gnolls from pouncing, and even the most broken terrain couldn't hold back the tidal wave of attackers.
Most importantly, the ratmen pouring out of the ground weren't attacking the gnolls. Their fighting style was almost identical to that of kobolds, but they were clearly even more mindless and savage.
Their terrifying numerical advantage, combined with their reckless morale, immediately dealt a second blow to this disaster zone.
The retainers who had barely survived the earthquake had been completely cut off from one another. They were already struggling to deal with the ratmen, and the instant the gnolls surged in, there were hardly any survivors left on the first
