The word appeared in more than a dozen stories, including "Corpse Transformation," "Painted Wall," "The Cricket," and "Xin Shisi Niang," and always meant a temple.
The screenwriter of A Chinese Ghost Story had taken the same shortcut, using "Lanruo" as the name of the temple in the film.
