A gunshot rang out. The strange yellow-and-black animal fell, and its companions scattered in all directions.
Frederick and the others gathered around it. They found that it had a doglike head and a monkey's body, and stood about 1.3 meters tall. A thick branch lay nearby.
"Fofana," Frederick called over the local man. "What is this?"
Fofana spoke evasively. "This... is called a dog-monkey. There are a few across the river... It's nothing to worry about."
From the way he was acting, Frederick knew there was more to the story.
The sky was clear today, yet within a radius of fifty meters, lightning suddenly flashed and thunder roared. Countless bolts snaked through the woods, spreading farther and farther.
The lightning continued for five minutes. Every tree and branch in its path was blasted apart and fell to the ground. The woods, covering an area of a couple of soccer fields, were reduced to nothing but bare trunks standing upright.
Fofana was soaked in cold sweat, and his hands and feet trembled as if his Tremor Disease had flared up.
