Background / History

Rudolf's mother died while he was young, and he was raised largely by his aunt, Lady Delden. When he was ten, Delden proposed that King William place him in the Royal Knight Order as a squire so he could receive a proper knightly education; William did not accept the proposal. Rudolf instead grew up in the palace, protected from the training and competition expected of other potential rulers. 38 536

As William's only heir, Rudolf was expected to inherit the Rhine Alliance despite an earlier military failure. Three years before the Wessen campaign, he underestimated the enemy and advanced rashly, losing the Low Countries and severely damaging his reputation. 132
