"Emergency... Bishop Bax, our people next door have run into trouble," the liaison officer's voice reported.
Without needing to be asked, Bax headed out immediately.
One of their own was in trouble—of course he would step in without a second word.
"Is this place cursed or something? Why is everyone here an enemy of the Church?" Bax grumbled as he walked.
The liaison officer was speechless. After a pause, he said, "Perhaps this is where the powerful and wealthy live. Anyone qualified to become a target isn't some small fry."
That made perfect sense. Anyone the Church put on its purge list was certainly no minor figure.
It was understandable that the powerful and wealthy clustered together.
In truth, the priests next door had been dragged into this by Bax as well.
Before Councilor Granger went home, he had called for reinforcements. The Church's cleanup team next door had then come up with the clever idea of ambushing him at the entrance.
Yet the moment they made their move, they ran into the military force that had come to pick up Councilor Granger.
What was there left to say? The other side attacked immediately.
By the time Bax arrived, that group of priests had already hidden away in a sorry state.
The military shuttles came equipped with small laser cannons, which were somewhat intimidating.
Not only that, their loudspeakers kept broadcasting calls for surrender.
After all, from a legal standpoint, these priests were no different from criminals.
"Fuck! Why did military people happen to show up right then? Could there be a mole?"
The priests hiding inside the building cursed furiously. The military shuttles had arrived far too coincidentally, as if they had known the plan in advance.
"Please rest assured, there will be no leaks. The Church will investigate.
