Background
Guan Shan was born and raised in Luoyang. Before meeting Shi Feizhe, he moved through more than a dozen sects and gangs, suffering repeated bad luck and instability. He eventually joined the Radiant Sacred Sect, where he took the believer’s name “David Guan” under its naming rules. 114 115 205
At twenty-eight, he sold himself in Luoyang’s East City Slave Market because no major sect would accept him and lesser sects could not fund his cultivation. His sole condition was the ability to continue practicing martial arts; his stated ambition was to become the greatest expert in the world. 112
Shi Feizhe offered him cultivation methods and a place in a planned martial academy. Though initially suspicious, Guan Shan accepted after hearing Shi Feizhe’s aim of making martial arts accessible to everyone. The two adopted the egalitarian forms of address “Comrade” or “Taoist,” later settling on “Dean Shi” for Shi Feizhe. 113 114
Appearance
Guan Shan is a tall, heavily built martial artist, described as over 1.8 meters tall with bronze skin and a muscular physique. 112
- Often bare-chested when first encountered in the slave market. 112
- Later travels with unkempt hair and a full beard, deliberately concealing his martial aura. 205
- Wields an iron whip more than three feet long, weighing over ten catties and segmented like bamboo. 137
Personality
Guan Shan is earnest, direct, and unusually serious about his ambitions. He calculates that he still has more than a century to pursue the title of greatest expert, repeatedly marking the years remaining in his home as a reminder of that goal. 112 205
His long experience with sects, gangs, and religious groups made him wary of manipulation and knowledgeable about Jianghu customs. He initially judges Shi Feizhe’s promises as suspicious, questions the danger of casually calling oneself a Taoist, and quickly recognizes Hu Shuo’s proposal as an attempt to recruit disposable cannon fodder. 113 114 209
Despite his sternness and desire for strength, he is compassionate toward the vulnerable. He rescues Danla and Mir from the Radiant Sacred Sect, buys food for beggars who attempt to rob him, and directs the one-eyed beggar Gou Sheng toward Yangzhou so the boy can pursue becoming a Great Hero. 117 205 206
