Background / History

Wang Xuantian rose to become the soul of the Black Mountain Rebel Army, a force assembled from drifters and bandits that occupied three counties. His personal strength, ability to reward followers with power, and fearsome reputation made him central to the rebellion’s cohesion; Tao Xingzheng believed that killing him would cause the army to collapse on its own 207 213.

He held a deep grudge against the Liu Family, calling Su Mu the first installment of a “blood debt” he intended to collect from them. Wang Xuantian had survived in the Dead Man’s Cave for more than twenty years and gained the means to forcefully comprehend fist momentum through demonic methods 210 220.

Appearance

Wang Xuantian initially conceals himself beneath black robes and a ferocious Black Tiger Mask. Beneath the mask, he appears pale and handsome, with the thin, sickly bearing of someone suffering from a long illness 208 212.

  • In his initial battlefield appearance, he is gaunt, colorless, and marked by disheveled salt-and-pepper hair 214.
  • His eyes are unusually clear and bright despite his frail appearance 214.
  • His demonic art progressively restores his youth, blackens his hair, repairs his body, and eventually leaves him looking younger than twenty 216 218.
  • At peak output, black demonic flames form a nine-inch, armor-like shell around his body 219.

Personality

Wang Xuantian is commanding, self-assured, and capable of inspiring fanatic loyalty. He personally accepts his followers’ oaths, grants them titles and strength, and is treated by the Black Mountain Army as both its ruler and its spiritual center 213 214.

His regard for followers is ultimately subordinate to his pursuit of power. He grants the Heavenly Generals rapid advancement, then consumes them as fuel when pressed by Su Mu. Even so, the Blind Swordsman and Sturdy Man willingly choose to die alongside him, indicating the depth of loyalty he commands 214 218 219.

He is driven by resentment toward aristocratic families and those he views as complicit in oppression. Before his defeat, he attempts to persuade Su Mu that they should stand on the same side against the noble families 225.

  • Its use appears to have limits, as Su Mu notes that Wang Xuantian’s ability to devour vitality cannot be without restriction 217.
