Chapter 44: The Myriad Ghost Ancestor's Might
The Ghost Fiend Ancestor, clearly a habitually overbearing individual, was not about to show weakness when facing the Myriad Ghost Ancestor. He took a step forward, his powerful Golden Core Stage Qi pressing down on the Myriad Ghost Ancestor. A vicious glint flashed in his eyes as he declared, "Myriad Ghosts, my son is dead. Anyone who dares to obstruct the investigation, I will kill."
"Kill who? Kill me?" Facing the Ghost Fiend's overwhelming ferocity, the Myriad Ghost Ancestor seemed unfazed. He clasped his hands behind his back and sneered, arrogantly stating, "If you truly have the ability, then come and try."
"Myriad Ghosts, don't push too hard." The Ghost Fiend's face twitched uncontrollably, as if he could barely restrain himself. Though he was furious, he knew that despite the Myriad Ghost Ancestor being much younger and less experienced, he possessed a unique combat style among those of the same level. Especially his Top Grade Spirit Ghost, which hadn't appeared in a long time. He wondered what level Ghost General it had reached now, but he estimated it couldn't be lower than level six, and likely already level seven or eight.
The Ghost Fiend harbored deep apprehension towards the Myriad Ghost Ancestor. This was why, in many other Cave Mansions, he would have gone alone. However, for the Myriad Ghost Cave, he had to bring an Elder from the Sect.
Seeing the atmosphere becoming increasingly heated, Elder Tu, invited as a mediator, chuckled and waved his sleeve, stepping between the two. "Alright, alright, you are all Senior Brothers in the same Sect, why the tension? Ghost Fiend, I have a few words for you. Myriad Ghost, it's already very gracious of him to let you investigate his disciple. Myriad Ghost, you should also be considerate of Ghost Fiend; after all, he is grieving the loss of his son."
The Myriad Ghost Ancestor let out a cold laugh. "If it weren't for the fact that you lost your son, I wouldn't even spare you a glance today." With that, he took a step back and spoke softly to Lei Dong and the other two, "Don't be afraid, just answer a few questions honestly. I believe you are all innocent. If he dares to act excessively, I will not stand idly by."
"Yes, Ancestor." The three, Lei Dong, Zuo Chao, and Ding Wanyan, responded.
The Ghost Fiend snorted in dissatisfaction and, without entering the main hall, began his interrogation at the entrance. He first looked at Lei Dong, whose cultivation was the lowest, and frowned slightly. "Myriad Ghosts, are you using this low-level disciple to impersonate a personal disciple?"
"Hmph." Seemingly extremely displeased with the Ghost Fiend, the Myriad Ghost Ancestor didn't even bother to reply.
The Ghost Fiend stared intently at Lei Dong and began his questioning, which consisted of typical inquiries like name and hometown. Lei Dong, guarding his mind, put on a show of being terrified, trembling and fearful.
"You killed my son." Suddenly, a ferocious flame erupted from the Ghost Fiend's eyes, and he roared in anger and shock, "Boy, die!"
Lei Dong was utterly terrified, his pores tightening, his mind reeling, almost incapable of thought. His only thought was, How did he know? However, even facing a Golden Core Stage cultivator, and knowing he was doomed, he wouldn't surrender without a fight. Despite his extreme fear, he resolved to fight back before he died.
"Enough." The Myriad Ghost Ancestor stepped in front of Lei Dong again and waved his hand. He sternly rebuked the Ghost Fiend, "Using Devil Sound Soul Seizure on a mere Qi Refining Level Six junior, is that amusing to you?"
With the Myriad Ghost Ancestor's shout and gesture, Lei Dong felt a tremor in his heart, a chill swept through him, and he shivered. Simultaneously, the previous fervor and surging blood Qi vanished without a trace.
"Myriad Ghosts, are you guilty and trying to cover your tracks, or are you deliberately causing trouble for me?" the Ghost Fiend roared, enraged.
Lei Dong, after a brief moment of stunned realization, understood what had happened. A chill ran down his spine, and the skin beneath his inner armor was slick with sweat. In a moment of carelessness, he had fallen for the Ghost Fiend's treacherous move and almost confessed.
He mused that Golden Core Ancestors were indeed formidable. He felt a lingering fear, realizing that if he had been exposed then and there, even the Myriad Ghost Ancestor might not have been able to save him.
"Alright, Ghost Fiend," Elder Tu once again played the peacemaker, advising, "Can you two stop being so hot-tempered? After checking the Storage Belt, move on to the next. In my opinion, this Qi Refining Level Six kid couldn't possibly have killed your son. Young man, I believe you, but still, please take out your Storage Belt for inspection as a routine procedure."
"Yes, Elder Tu." Lei Dong, relieved, respectfully and fearfully produced his Storage Belt.
The Ghost Fiend was not polite either. He snatched it, erased Lei Dong's mark, and swept his Spiritual Sense through it. He then snorted, "Myriad Ghosts, is this kid your illegitimate son? Several Upper Grade Magic Items, and over ten thousand spirit stones."
"Heh, Ghost Fiend, do you think I'm a pig like you?" Since he had already offended the Ghost Fiend, the Myriad Ghost Ancestor didn't mind offending him further.
The Ghost Fiend's expression changed. He threw the Storage Belt back to Lei Dong. Not wanting to stir up more trouble, he proceeded to interrogate Zuo Chao and Ding Wanyan in a similar manner.
Zuo Chao and Ding Wanyan had nothing to hide, as they were not the ones who had committed the murder, so no issues arose. However, for some reason, the Ghost Fiend was highly suspicious of Ding Wanyan. After repeated questioning and inspection, he was unwilling to let her go. The reason was that Ding Wanyan had been traveling outside the Myriad Ghost Cave around the time his son died. Her cultivation level and considerable magical power were sufficient for her to have killed his son.
Lei Dong, however, secretly speculated that the Ghost Fiend likely saw that Ding Wanyan was both powerful and beautiful. He knew his son's lecherous nature and surmised that he might have taken a liking to this powerful female disciple, and after being rejected in his advances, was killed in retaliation. This was why he was so suspicious of Ding Wanyan. Although he felt he had implicated Senior Sister Ding, he knew she wouldn't be in real trouble since she hadn't killed anyone, especially with the Myriad Ghost Ancestor protecting her, as he doted on Senior Sister Ding.
As expected, seeing the Ghost Fiend becoming increasingly insistent with Ding Wanyan, the Myriad Ghost Ancestor truly became enraged. He flicked his sleeve, and a vast, unparalleled force sent the Ghost Fiend flying back several feet. Almost simultaneously, a Natal Ghost Servant appeared before him, clad in pitch-black armor, appearing as solid as substance, with faint black mist swirling around it. Its agile and ferocious eyes fixed on the Ghost Fiend Ancestor.
"Level nine Ghost General!" The Ghost Fiend, about to fly into a rage and turn hostile, cried out in shock upon seeing the Myriad Ghost Ancestor's Ghost Servant. Not only him, but even Elder Tu's smiling face couldn't help but change. A level nine Ghost General was equivalent to a cultivator at the ninth level of the Golden Core Stage. Everyone knew that this level nine Ghost General of the Myriad Ghost Ancestor originated from a Top Grade Spirit Ghost, possessed exceptional talent, and was proficient in several powerful spells. Furthermore, everyone knew that the Myriad Ghost Ancestor also had a Ghost General refined from a high-grade spirit ghost, which was slightly inferior but undoubtedly not weak.
"Ghost Fiend, do you really think I'm easy to bully?" The Myriad Ghost Ancestor was truly angered. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to. Even if my Yan'er didn't kill your son, even if she did kill him because he harassed her, she would have been right to do so. Now get out, or you will remain in my Myriad Ghost Cave forever."
The Ghost Fiend's face turned from pale to green. He wanted to retaliate but felt a twinge of fear when he saw the level nine Ghost General. He then glanced at Elder Tu, only to see Elder Tu gazing at the level nine Ghost General with an expression of infatuation. A Ghost General refined from a Top Grade Spirit Ghost! With careful cultivation, there was a significant chance it could advance to the Ghost King level!
Seeing this, the Ghost Fiend realized Elder Tu was somewhat displeased with him and that any hope of gaining his support to confront the Myriad Ghost Ancestor was wishful thinking. On his own, he was no match for the Myriad Ghost Ancestor. With a dark expression, he uttered a parting threat, "Myriad Ghosts, I'll remember this." With that, he conjured a rolling cloud of black mist and flew directly into the sky.
"So what if you remember me? Are you going to ask me to help you if you can't have another son?" the Myriad Ghost Ancestor sneered at the sky.
The pitiful Ghost Fiend Ancestor almost fell from mid-air upon hearing this.
