The Shadow Devil Race was a people caught between matter and soul. They possessed certain biological traits as well as spiritual ones, but this combination was unlike that of any other living being. Traditional life-forms, such as humans, had weak souls. Through constant cultivation and growth, however, their souls would eventually grow stronger, forming Nascent Souls, becoming Primordial Spirits, and so on.

Other life-forms were born with stronger souls and weaker bodies, such as the Corpse Insect Race that Lei Dong had wiped out.

The Shadow Devils were even more unusual. Their souls and bodies were inseparable, one seamless whole. At times, they could turn their souls into flesh, or transform their bodies into a spiritual state. This shifting between the real and the unreal made every member of the Shadow Devil Race a born assassin.

It was said that the High-ranking Devil Race had spent a great deal of effort and paid a heavy price to conquer the Shadow Devil Race and make them fight in their wars. Even long afterward, many High-ranking Devils had been assassinated by powerful Shadow Devils who resisted their rule.

Lei Dong had no intention of letting such a race—one that had once given even the High-ranking Devil Race a headache—slip away. He was determined to make them his own. Because of the Shadow Devil Race's peculiar nature, ordinary methods of placing restrictions on them simply wouldn't work.

Fortunately, the High-ranking Devil Race had developed an effective tool for capturing the Shadow Devils long ago, allowing them to be captured and imprisoned just like members of other races.
