Royal Academy of Magic, Outdoor Training Ground No. 7.
This training ground was built with neatly cut black basalt, its ground inscribed with powerful protective and energy-absorbing runes. Eight giant pillars carved with elemental totems stood tall around the perimeter, each topped with a massive magic crystal capable of activating a shield to isolate energy impacts from within and without. This was the venue for senior students to conduct practical combat drills and important matches.
Today, the training ground was unusually crowded with students, and even a few figures clad in lecturer or high-level mage robes were present. All eyes were focused on the two young women confronting each other in the center of the arena—Eliza von Windsor and Eleanor Soros. The public duel between the academy's "Twin Pearls" always attracted the most attention. Presiding over this teaching-oriented spar was the academy's veteran Great Mage and Elemental School tutor, Mr. Aldous Ironstaff. His hair and beard were snow-white, his face stern, and he held a staff inlaid with a large sapphire, his sharp gaze fixed on the two girls in the arena.
Eliza wore a moon-white mage robe, her posture upright, her silver hair tied back in a neat ponytail. Her exquisite face was as calm as a frozen expanse. In her hand, she gripped a staff entirely condensed from ice crystals, emanating a chilling aura—"Whispers of the Frost Speaker," a gift from Countess Margaret upon her promotion to intermediate mage. Merely standing there, the surrounding temperature began to drop quietly, and tiny ice crystals condensed in the air, drifting down slowly.
Her opponent, Eleanor, was like a blazing flame. Her fiery red curly hair resembled leaping flames, and her custom-fitted flame-colored mage robe outlined her slender figure. At the tip of her crimson staff, "Heart of Molten Fire," a ruby the size of a pigeon's egg seemed to have magma flowing within, emitting a scorching heat. A confident, even slightly provocative smile played on her lips, and her emerald eyes blazed with fighting spirit. Waves of heat surged around her, rivaling Eliza's ice domain and forming an invisible energy boundary in the center of the arena. Ice shards and hot currents collided, emitting faint "sizzling" sounds.
"This is a teaching spar, so stop before it goes too far," Tutor Aldous's deep voice rang out, imbued with Magic Power, clearly carrying across the entire venue. "Begin!"
Before his voice even faded, Eleanor launched her attack! She knew well that Eliza's ice magic excelled at control and defense, and she couldn't allow her to set up her battlefield calmly.
"Dance, Fire Sprite! Chain Fireball!"
Eleanor swung her staff, her incantation short and forceful. In an instant, three fiery orange fireballs, the size of heads and dazzlingly hot, flew in a triangular formation, tearing through the air with a whistling sound, heading straight for Eliza's upper, middle, and lower sections! Their speed was extreme, demonstrating her exquisite control over fire elemental magic.
A low gasp rose from the onlookers. Eleanor's supporters' faces lit up with excitement; such a swift offensive right from the start!
Facing the incoming fireballs, Eliza's eyes showed no fluctuation. She didn't even move her feet, merely tapping her ice crystal staff lightly on the ground.
"Essence of frost, gather into a shield. Ice Wall Technique!"
A translucent ice wall, a foot thick, instantly rose from the ground, standing before Eliza. The fireballs slammed violently into the ice wall!
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Violent explosions erupted, firelight scattering and ice shards flying! The scorching airwaves and icy coldness spread outwards, forcing the students in the front row to take half a step back. The ice wall vibrated intensely, large cracks appearing on its surface, but it ultimately did not shatter, successfully blocking this wave of attacks.
"Not done yet!" Eleanor shouted, clearly not expecting to succeed with just one round of fireballs. She tapped her staff repeatedly, chanting again: "Condense, Explosive Power! Flame Impact!"
A more concentrated, nearly white conical flame impact wave, like a giant spear, fiercely pierced the already cracked ice wall!
However, the moment the Flame Impact was about to hit the ice wall, Eliza's cool voice sounded again from behind the wall: "Disperse."
"Bang!" The massive ice wall suddenly disintegrated on its own, but it didn't scatter. Instead, it transformed into countless ice blades, palm-sized and with edges as sharp as knives. Like a blizzard whipped up by a gale, they surged towards Eleanor! This transformation of the Ice Wall into Blades was masterful, instantly turning defense into a fierce counterattack!
"A mere parlor trick!" Eleanor, though startled, was not flustered. Her red hair flew as she drew a complete circle in front of her with her staff: "Guard me, Ring of Flames! Repelling Fire Ring!"
"Hummm!" A scorching ring of flames suddenly expanded outwards from her, forming a constantly rotating wall of fire. The dense ice blades hit the fire ring, most of them instantly vaporizing with "hissing" sounds, creating a large area of white steam. Those few that penetrated the fire ring were weakened by the high temperature and fell powerlessly to the ground.
Steam billowed, temporarily obscuring the vision of both sides.
"Good opportunity!" Eleanor's eyes flashed. Using the steam as cover, she quickly repositioned herself while muttering an incantation. The ruby on her staff glowed intensely, clearly preparing a more powerful spell.
But Eliza's response was faster! She seemed to have anticipated Eleanor's move. Almost at the same time the Repelling Fire Ring erupted, she had silently cast another spell: "Spread, obscuring ice mist. Frost Breath!"
She gently exhaled, and a stream of extremely cold white frost merged with the previous steam, instantly turning a large area into extremely low-visibility, icy fog! This mist not only blocked vision but also carried a bone-chilling cold that could slow down the opponent's movements and casting speed.
The spell Eleanor was preparing immediately faltered. She felt as if she were stuck in a swamp, her movements becoming sluggish, even her Magic Power flow affected. She cursed inwardly, forced to interrupt the spell she was preparing and prioritize dispelling this annoying mist instead: "Scorching wind, dispel the cold! Gale Technique!" (Note: Fire mages sometimes auxiliary-trained in basic wind spells to deal with special situations.)
A gust of hot wind blew out from her, barely clearing the dense fog around her. However, the moment the fog thinned, she saw Eliza's figure closing in!
Eliza had actually closed the distance! She knew that in open terrain, fire magic had an advantage in burst power and range. In close-quarters combat, utilizing the control and slowing effects of ice magic would be more advantageous for her!
"Freeze! Icy Touch!" Eliza pointed her staff, and a cold beam shot towards Eleanor.
Eleanor dodged hastily. The beam grazed the edge of her robe, leaving a slick patch of ice on the ground. Her footsteps faltered, and she nearly fell.
"Damn it!" Eleanor was furious. She no longer held back, pouring Magic Power madly into her staff: "Roar, Firebird! Fire Phoenix Impact!"
A giant fire phoenix, over three meters in wingspan, composed entirely of scorching flames, appeared out of thin air. It let out a clear cry and, with the momentum to incinerate everything, lunged towards Eliza! This was an extremely powerful intermediate fire magic spell, requiring immense control. The stone slabs it passed over turned red-hot!
Facing this awe-inspiring attack, Eliza finally showed a solemn expression. She retreated rapidly, gripping her staff tightly with both hands. Vast amounts of Magic Power surged, and the ground beneath her feet was quickly covered with a thick layer of solid ice, the water elements in the air converging madly: "Stand firm, guardian of extreme cold! Ice Crystal Guardian!"
A huge, thick, ice-blue shield, carved with arcane runes and emanating an ancient chill, instantly condensed before her! The shield's surface was smooth as a mirror, with faint streams of light swirling within.
"RUMBLE!!!"
The fire phoenix slammed violently into the Ice Crystal Guardian! It erupted with an energy impact several times more intense than before! Red and blue light intertwined wildly, annihilating each other. Waves of scorching heat and icy cold swept outwards like a tsunami. The protective runes around the training ground were activated, glowing brilliantly, before they could block the residual energy wave.
All the onlookers held their breath, watching the scene in the arena with bated tension.
The clash of fire and ice lasted for several seconds. Finally, the fire phoenix let out a mournful cry and dissipated, its energy exhausted. The Ice Crystal Guardian before Eliza was also covered in cracks. With a "crack," it shattered, turning into a sky full of ice crystals.
A draw!
But just then, Eleanor's face turned pale, and her body swayed slightly. The high-intensity Magic Power output had left her briefly weakened. Eliza, though also a little pale, remained calm. She seized this fleeting opportunity!
"Imprisonment!" She tapped her staff on the ground again, Magic Power transmitting through the earth.
"Crack, crack, crack!" Cold chains emerged from the ground beneath Eleanor's feet, like living venomous snakes, quickly wrapping around her ankles! A bone-chilling cold instantly struck, stiffening her movements.
"You!" Eleanor was both shocked and enraged, trying to break free, but the ice chains were exceptionally sturdy.
Eliza didn't continue her attack, simply standing calmly, breathing slightly heavily. The victor was decided; at least in this "teaching spar," she had gained the upper hand.
Tutor Aldous raised his staff at the opportune moment, a gentle wave of Magic Power separating the remaining energy on the field. His loud voice rang out: "Spar ends! Eliza von Windsor wins."
The sidelines fell silent for a moment, then erupted into various discussions. Eliza's supporters breathed a sigh of relief, showing admiration. Eleanor's supporters, however, looked somewhat dejected and unwilling.
Eleanor forcefully shattered the ice chains on her ankles, her face ashen, her emerald eyes filled with unwillingness and rage. She stared intently at Eliza, her chest heaving violently. She hadn't expected to be unable to overpower Eliza in terms of her most proud burst power, and instead, the opponent had seized her weakness with more exquisite control and tactics.
"I concede," Eliza said faintly, retracting her staff and turning to walk towards the sidelines. Her back remained cool and aloof, as if the fierce duel just now was merely a routine practice.
Tutor Aldous watched Eliza's retreating figure, nodding slightly, a hint of admiration flashing in his eyes. This girl not only had extraordinary talent but also a terrifyingly steady disposition. Her understanding of magic and her on-the-spot adaptability far surpassed that of her peers. In contrast, while Eleanor's talent was also excellent, she was impatient and overly focused on power, easily falling into her opponent's rhythm.
He glanced again at Eleanor, whose face was full of defiance, and shook his head inwardly. The Soros girl needed more tempering. However, having such a strong rival might be a good thing for both of them.
Eleanor clenched her staff tightly, feeling the gazes cast upon her from all directions, especially the implied sympathy or mockery, which made her feel immensely humiliated. She looked at Eliza's back, which seemed indifferent to everything, and the jealousy and competitive spirit in her heart burned even more intensely.
"Eliza von Windsor... Don't get too smug!" she gritted her teeth inwardly. "Your Coming-of-Age Ceremony is soon! Once you marry that good-for-nothing, I'll see how long you can maintain this composure! By then, the title of the academy's number one genius will definitely be mine!"
The clash of ice and fire temporarily came to a halt, but the competition between the two became even more intense and complex because of this match. The outcome of this duel, as the watching students dispersed, quickly spread throughout the entire academy, adding a peculiar focus to Eliza's upcoming Coming-of-Age Ceremony.
