Under normal circumstances, this seemed like something that shouldn't happen.
After noticing this slight oddity, Fu Qian didn't look at the second book's contents. Instead, his fingers quickly searched downward.
Soon, he confirmed that this stack of exceptionally well-kept books had indeed been placed with their fronts and backs alternating.
In theory, this was an insignificant little detail. But on closer thought, it wasn't normal at all.
He'd only caught a fleeting glimpse when he'd returned home earlier, but Fu Qian had noticed a bookshelf in the living room. It had looked rather empty.
Given Jigsaw's tone, there was a good chance these books had been moved from that shelf.
But there was a problem. Their excellent condition showed that someone cared a great deal about them, and a person who regularly looked after their books would never make the mistake of placing them upside down.
In other words, Jigsaw was most likely responsible for these books being reversed.
And he clearly didn't do things without a reason.
"The simplest Morse code?"
Fu Qian glanced at the door at the end of the passage and muttered to himself.
He'd counted them earlier. There were exactly twenty books in the tallest stack.
The next moment, the fronts and backs of the twenty books quickly became symbols, lining up in a sequence before him.
Grouped in fives, with the fronts and backs representing dots and dashes, they made exactly four digits.
But he couldn't yet determine which side represented dots and which represented dashes, so there were two possible combinations.
1629 and 6174.
As Fu Qian worked out the combinations, he quickly checked the other stacks of books.
They were all normal. None of them had been placed in alternating directions.
So was this what Jigsaw meant by asking whether the books
