If he arranged for others to lie in wait, ring the bell once a demigod entered its range, then charge in and finish the job, he could easily overwhelm the affected demigod.
But after thinking it over, he realized that he could already overwhelm most demigods without all that trouble, so the tactic didn't seem particularly useful.
Here, though, the same idea might give him a sliver of a chance.
