All was silent, and shadows danced among the trees.

The old car had pulled up somewhere that wasn't especially remote, but the courtyard and its building had an unmistakably old-fashioned design.

Surrounded by trees, the place seemed all the more gloomy and oppressive.

To make matters worse, from this angle, the half-moon was perfectly bisected by the building's pointed roof.

Even with the light fairly bright, it still couldn't illuminate the dark roof tiles. The atmosphere was absolutely perfect.

In short, they'd only driven a few dozen feet off the main road, yet it felt like they'd crashed straight into a horror movie.

"You've got to be kidding me."

One effect of the setting was that the tough guy, whose blood had been boiling just moments ago, forgot to keep blowing up. After staring blankly for a few seconds, he immediately shouted at Batters in a tone that said, "Are you messing with me?"

Even that shout, though, was hushed.

And so far, Batters, who'd announced that they'd arrived, showed no sign of opening the door and getting out.

"This place is so far from the road. You're telling me you saw something flashing inside as you drove past? And that room you mentioned—"

The tough guy kept going, carefully examining the spot Batters had pointed out halfway through his sentence.

"Never mind that the window's absurdly high. There's no way you could've seen it from the road at that angle."

The tough guy looked a little hotheaded, but he was also sharp enough to quickly find evidence to back himself up.

And to be fair, he wasn't making any of it up. Everything he'd said was true.

The place Batters had pointed out was almost completely hidden from view from the road.
