"When did I ever kill anyone?"
Faced with Tan Mingxue's accusation, Fu Qian asked nonchalantly.
"Still playing dumb?"
Tan Mingxue sneered.
"Everyone already knows about yesterday's conflict here. You personally killed a Transcendent. Don't tell me you're planning to deny it?"
"I'm sorry, but we're responsible for everything related to Transcendents. Since this involves the death of a Transcendent, you'll have to come with me."
"Oh, you mean that?"
Fu Qian didn't look the least bit flustered.
"Someone did die here yesterday, but he fell from the fourth floor and died from the fall."
"You can explain all that after you come back with me."
Tan Mingxue said coldly, a murderous glint flashing across her face.
"My patience is limited. If you keep being stubborn, don't blame me for getting rough."
"Team Leader Tan!"
Wen Li was getting anxious.
"Mr. Fu is a bodyguard we hired through perfectly normal channels. The conflict happened only because an assassin tried to harm me, and Mr. Fu was simply doing his job. How can you refuse to hear both sides?"
Seeing Wen Li's expression, Tan Mingxue softened her tone a little.
"We're only asking Mr. Fu to come help us confirm a few things. If there's no problem, he'll be back soon. Please wait here, Miss Wen."
"Since this involves a serious fight and the death of a Transcendent, we have to take responsibility for everyone's safety. I hope you understand."
Looks like she won't let this go until she takes me away today, Fu Qian thought.
According to the information he'd found, they did have the authority to investigate any conflict involving Transcendents.
But it had only happened yesterday, at the Wen Family estate, and she'd come over today. Fu Qian didn't believe there weren't other factors at play.
Thinking of Young Master Ye, who hadn't shown up all day, had he switched to tattling?
He'd reported the whole thing and sent the Night Watchers after him.
Even if he couldn't get someone else to kill Fu Qian, he could at least use this opportunity to find out more about him.
The Night Watchers' attitude was also somewhat peculiar. Tan Mingxue had put it politely, but it was obvious she didn't want Wen Li coming along.
Was she really that unwelcome?
As things stood, Fu Qian had only two choices.
Option one: go with Team Leader Tan, leave Miss Wen here, and rely on those bodyguards and Young Master Ye's group to keep her alive for a while.
Option two: refuse to cooperate, go full slaughter mode, kill Team Leader Tan Mingxue, then take out the endless stream of Night Watchers who came after her, one by one, until no one was left to interfere with his mission.
That was a bit too much of a slaughter.
If he left, Miss Wen might well lose her life. But if he chose option two, the assassins could just stand by and watch.
And Wen Li would probably be scared out of her mind. That wouldn't be good for someone with a Mental System ability.
Fu Qian decided to cooperate for now and see what the Night Watchers in this area were like.
It would also help him gather information in case he went with the slaughter route.
"No problem. I'll come with you."
Under Wen Li's worried gaze, Fu Qian followed Tan Mingxue out of the Wen Family mansion.
In the crowd, Fu Qian spotted Mr. Ji, the man he'd fought twice the day before. Young Master Ye, meanwhile, was nowhere to be seen.
The journey was quite long. The car wound its way through the streets, and just as Fu Qian was about to lose patience, it finally stopped.
"Please, come in."
Tan Mingxue got out first. Fu Qian followed, and saw the Night Watchers' headquarters for the first time.
The place was far more down-to-earth than he'd imagined.
In stark contrast to the scenic private villa of the Wen Family, the Night Watchers' headquarters was right in the bustling city center.
From the outside, it looked utterly ordinary, though it was quite large.
It wasn't until he followed Tan Mingxue inside that he noticed what made it different.
The building's interior was clearly laid out with great care, and many areas were made from special materials.
There weren't many people coming and going, but every one of them had an imposing air and formidable strength.
"A few other people involved will be here shortly."
Tan Mingxue led Fu Qian to an office, motioned for him to sit, and took out a delicate notebook.
"Before then, I need to confirm a few simple things with you."
"Go ahead."
Fu Qian answered lazily as he looked around.
"Is Fu Qian your real name? In theory, all Transcendents have to be registered with the Night Watchers. But I've checked all the records, and you've never been registered."
"Of course it is. As for why there's no information about me, maybe it's because I only became a Transcendent recently."
"Oh?"
Tan Mingxue rolled her eyes.
"From what we know so far, your strength is at least Tier Six. Are you telling me you went from an ordinary person to an Intermediate Tier Transcendent in just a few days?"
"Why not? The old man gazed at the heavens the night before last, had a sudden revelation, and achieved enlightenment."
Clang!
Tan Mingxue slammed the notebook onto the table.
"Do you know who you killed yesterday?"
"An assassin. Let me repeat myself: I only wounded him. He fell to his death on his own."
"And as a professional bodyguard, I was simply doing my job."
"A professional bodyguard."
Tan Mingxue was so angry she laughed.
"A professional bodyguard making as much as twenty-five thousand a month, right? You really don't charge much!"
"Small profits, big sales. Our reputation is what matters!"
"What's going on?"
Just as Tan Mingxue seemed about to lose her temper, the office door creaked open and a bespectacled man in his thirties walked in.
"This guy is impossible to reason with. You question him."
Tan Mingxue stood up with a snort.
"Experts always have their quirks!"
The bespectacled man grinned as he took the notebook and flipped through it. Then he held out a hand to Fu Qian and introduced himself.
"Mr. Fu, right? I'm Qi Xue."
"Please don't misunderstand. We asked you to come in today purely because it's our duty.
"After all, a powerful Intermediate Tier expert has suddenly appeared in our jurisdiction. We have to understand the situation.
"As for the conflict, Transcendents are full of vigor. Fights are bound to happen, and we can't possibly step in every time."
Now that was more like it. A fellow professional with much better work ethic.
Fu Qian nodded.
"Sure. Ask away."
"We already have the basic information."
The bespectacled man flipped through Tan Mingxue's notes.
"So I'll start with the question I'm most curious about. Why would an expert like you work as a bodyguard for the Wen Family?"
"I was doing someone a favor."
"Who?"
The bespectacled man perked up.
"I can't say."
After a few more inconsequential questions, the bespectacled man finally set the notebook down.
"Thank you for your cooperation. You can go."
"Hey!"
Tan Mingxue was alarmed.
"How can you let him go?"
"Based on what we know, Mr. Fu has a clean record. The conflict was part of his duty, and as for his lack of a previous record, we've got one now."
The bespectacled man waved a hand, signaling Tan Mingxue not to say anything more.
Then he turned to Fu Qian.
"Mr. Fu, you can ask us questions too."
"Questions?"
Fu Qian thought for a moment, then pointed at him and Tan Mingxue.
"How many people in this headquarters are as good at fighting as you two?"
