Background and History

Nirgalia became aware of her existence with her power and name already intact. She knew that her power came from someone she called “Mother,” but had no inherited memories explaining her origins. Born into a chaotic wasteland, she spent years searching for traces of Mother. She stayed for a time at a toy workshop whose inhabitants could still converse with her, then found survivors in the World Within the Painting. When they feared her presence, she pretended to be captured and allowed them to seal her beneath their prison 151 2212 2213.

Fu Qian met her there. She identified his Pus Stone as a fragment of Human Pus and left a trace of her power on his key. Later, she guided him to a painting made with her mother’s blood. Nirgalia explained that her blood could serve as paint on that canvas, but making a new world would destroy the old one. Fu Qian instead incorporated corruption into the world’s essence, becoming the first Dark Moon Knight; Nirgalia planned to establish the Dark Moon Church 141 146 150 151.

Much later, Nirgalia and Fu Qian investigated the Nightmare Corridor and found a statue of the first-generation Dark Moon. A scroll left in its hand removed the restrictions the Laws of the Stars had placed on Nirgalia. She subsequently used the scroll to bury the concept of the Other Shore and gave it to Fu Qian as a means of briefly restoring his perception of supernatural activity 2289 2290 2291 2299 2300.

Appearance

Nirgalia commonly presents a human face and wears a pointed hat. Her face has supernatural properties, so she severs onlookers’ cognition to prevent them from realizing what they are seeing 141 2149.

• Her body can depart sharply from human form: her arm has become tentacles and tendrils, with the change spreading across her upper body and face 1396.
• A small doll-like image associated with her had long wings; she is also shown arranging her wings while reclining 2293 2300.

Abilities and Skills

Dark Moon power

Nirgalia manipulates darkness, cold and moonlight, and can apply Dark Moon power to objects 2126 2144 2227 2284.

• She trapped the Guardian Angel in darkness and immobilized another target through descending cold 2227 2144.
• She reshaped and enchanted Fu Qian’s head armor with ghostly-blue moonlight 2126.
• In the Nightmare Corridor, she fused her power with its moonlight to suppress a pervasive attack 2284.

World and Law manipulation

Nirgalia can work with the rules of the World Within the Painting and the Dark Moon faith 151 1395 2128.

• Her blood could act as paint for a new world, but only on the existing canvas and at the cost of the old world 151.
• She reinforced a painting and guided a connection that helped preserve a place as her own existence faded 1391 1395.
• She demonstrated a new Law that could answer prayers, leaving its responses to the Duchess’s discretion 2127 2128.

Perception, concealment and Dreamscape control

• Nirgalia can hide herself and apply a cognition-severing effect that keeps others from recognizing the supernatural nature of her face 2149 2300.
• She can pause activity within a Nightmare to investigate without disturbing its inhabitants, though one such freeze had limited range and duration 2211 2229 2232.
• She located and seized a Divinity-ranked intruder through a void connection at the toy workshop 2213.

Descent between worlds

Cross-world contact is difficult and can limit what Nirgalia senses or communicates 549 2070 2121.

• Fu Qian’s Loss of Color state allowed her to perceive him across otherwise independent space-times 549.
• A bone chain closely connected to her can provide an anchor for descent when supplied with Higher Being flesh and blood. Her manifestation in the Other Shore was temporary, and she could not sense outside it 2121 2231.
• In the Nightmare Corridor, she could descend without an additional sacrifice while the bone chain was present 2277.

Equipment and Creations

• Starlight Key — Fu Qian’s key, on which Nirgalia left a trace of her aura 141 146.
• Silvery White Mask — a gift to Fu Qian that conceals his aura 402 442 549.
• Bone chain / Spinal Lock — an object connected to Nirgalia since birth and used to establish an anchor for contact or descent 2070 2121 2271.
• Pact Book of Restraint — a book she created to hold the Guardian Angel’s restraint rather than its essence 2227 2228.
• Burial Scroll — a relic of the first-generation Dark Moon that removed Nirgalia’s restriction under the Stars Law. She later used it to bury the Other Shore concept and gave it to Fu Qian 2290 2291 2299 2300.

Relationships

• Fu Qian — her Dark Moon Knight and frequent collaborator. She guides and rewards him, while he helps investigate her origins and the worlds’ changing rules 151 549 2128 2296.
• First-generation Dark Moon (“Mother”) — the source Nirgalia identifies for her power. Nirgalia searched for her traces and later found a scroll she had left, though the circumstances of Nirgalia’s birth remain unclear 2212 2213 2290 2291.
• The Duchess — an inhabitant of the World Within the Painting whom Nirgalia later incorporated into the new Law as a possible responder to prayers 142 2128.
