History

Crisis of Evil Spirits

Great Shang originally encompassed thirty-six prefectures, but widespread Malevolent Spirit and monster activity severed roads, waterways, post stations, and communications with distant territories. At one point, the empire held firm control over only sixteen prefectures; four had been retaken in recent decades, while the other twenty defended themselves in isolation behind sealed cities. 19

During an earlier existential crisis, the Three Sages emerged and saved Great Shang from collapse. Their efforts gave the nation time to regain stability, restore its strength, and begin pursuing the recovery of its lost prefectures. 146 207

The Demon Subduing Bureau was established to guard the state and its people against supernatural threats. Its long-term mission included eliminating Evil Spirits, resisting Demon Countries, and reclaiming Great Shang’s former territory. 195 217

Recovery of Qingque Prefecture

Qingque Prefecture was a strategic borderland long sought by Great Shang. Its occupation by the Divine Sparrow Kingdom prevented its recovery, while surrounding Demon Countries maintained a tacit mutual-defense arrangement to stop Great Shang from defeating them individually. 146 152

After Ning Xiu killed the Wind and Thunder Sparrow Dukes, the Divine Sparrow Kingdom lost two of its three Dragon Elephant Upper Realm experts. Que Sanyin subsequently surrendered the kingdom’s territory outside its capital, delivered the Divine Sparrow King, and pledged future military support; Qingque Prefecture thereby returned to Great Shang’s control. 154 162

The Yin Tide

After Shen Jiangxing discovered a major secret through the Great Shang Divine Stone Tablet, Emperor Wu ordered the population to prepare for relocation to Central Province. 168

Shen Jiangxing deployed the Yang Yao Imperial Array over Central Province. Its golden barrier resisted the Yin Tide, prevented Yin energy and Undead Creatures from breeding within the protected region, and preserved Great Shang as a human sanctuary. 192

By the time Ning Xiu returned from the Outer Regions, Great Shang had survived the disaster within the array’s protection, although Undead Tides continued to attack its borders. 192 193

Final Restoration

In the era of abundant Dao essence following the events at Burial Sea Ridge, Great Shang recovered all of its lost lands. The empire once again held all thirty-six prefectures, fulfilling the Demon Subduing Bureau’s founding ambition. 217

Government and Administration

Imperial Rule

The Wu imperial clan rules Great Shang. Emperor Wu governs from Chaotian Capital and personally directs major matters involving national fortune, the Demon Subduing Bureau, and the survival of the state. 42 149 196

Great Shang also has thirty-six marquises. Two of the most powerful marquises hold National Guardian Artifacts and serve as leading representatives among their peers. 125

Official Path

Most officials follow the Confucian Path or cultivate through Martial Arts, the Immortal Path, or Buddhism. Official Path practitioners manifest Merit Bodies, whose color reflects their rank. 34

Official Path Rank Merit Body Color
Lower Three Ranks Azure 34
Middle Three Ranks Crimson 34
Upper Three Ranks Purple 34

Royal blood can alter a Merit Body’s appearance. Wu Huannian’s purple Merit Body possessed a four-clawed coiled dragon, while five claws are reserved for the Emperor. 34

Demon Subduing Bureau

The Demon Subduing Bureau is Great Shang’s principal force against Evil Spirits, Demons, Undead Creatures, and hostile foreign powers. Its captains patrol the interior, conduct expeditions into lost prefectures, and maintain forward positions in the Outer Regions. 19 123

  • Demon Subduing Captains — Field operatives organized by rank, including Bronze Leopard, Silver Tiger, and Golden Dragon captains. 72 74 123
  • Golden Dragon Demon Subduing Captains — May either remain in Chaotian Capital to study five ancient mysterious steles or establish Protectorates in the Outer Regions. 123
  • Protector Envoys — High-ranking frontier leaders who govern Protectorates, gather intelligence, cultivate local forces, and prepare for coordinated reconquest. A Protector Envoy may meet the Emperor without kneeling. 140 149
  • Protectorates — Great Shang maintained eighteen Protectorates in the Outer Regions at the time Qin Daorong described the system. 123

National Fortune and State Relics

Great Shang National Fortune

Great Shang’s national fortune is a tangible power tied to the empire and its ruler. Emperor Wu used it to intervene when Ning Xiu was near death, sending nine purple dragons and a golden “Great Shang” character into Ning Xiu’s Martial Aperture; the act helped awaken and stabilize him as a Dragon Elephant Upper Realm cultivator. 149

Ning Xiu’s survival was regarded as a major gain for the nation, and his own stated ambition became restoring all thirty-six prefectures to Great Shang. 149

Great Shang Divine Stone Tablet

The Great Shang Divine Stone Tablet fell from the eastern sky during the era of Evil Spirit chaos, causing heavenly fire and devastation across a thousand-mile area of Central Province. Great Shang later recovered it and brought it to Chaotian Capital. 195

Its existence contributed to Great Shang’s survival and the founding of the Demon Subduing Bureau. The Three Sages and later cultivators derived cultivation methods and insights from it. 149 195

  • Shen Jiangxing used knowledge gained from the tablet to foresee the Yin Tide and organize Great Shang’s response. 194
  • Ning Xiu’s comprehension of the tablet preceded his breakthrough to the Inner Scenery Saint Realm. 194 195
  • The tablet’s activation produced Heavenly Script Rules that brought widespread enlightenment to Great Shang’s people, while also attracting hostile high-realm cultivators. 195 197
  • In later years, the tablet ceased feeding Great Shang’s national fortune and instead began forcibly consuming it; Emperor Wu accepted Ning Xiu’s mission to take it to Heavenly Human City. 208

National Guardian Artifacts

Great Shang possesses National Guardian Artifacts, powerful state treasures associated with national fortune and military strength. Before the forging of Ning Xiu’s spear, the empire had three such artifacts: one held in the palace and two wielded by powerful marquises. 125

Hechuan later forged a new National Guardian Artifact for Ning Xiu, whose creation announced itself with a pillar of purple light over Chaotian Capital. 124

Defense of Chaotian Capital and Central Province

Chaotian Capital became a forbidden place for Evil Spirits; any Evil Spirit that entered was expected not to leave alive. 146

During the Yin Tide, the Yang Yao Imperial Array transformed Central Province into a protected enclave. The barrier formed a vast golden dome marked by floating “Shang” characters, separating living, fertile land within from the polluted Profound Yin Domain outside. 192

  • Low-level Undead Creatures were pulverized upon striking the barrier. 193
  • Great Shang soldiers defended the formation with repeating crossbows during Undead Tides. 193
  • The array resisted Yin energy, prevented Undead breeding within Central Province, and made direct assaults from outside more difficult. 192

Society and Culture

Champion Camp

The Champion Camp recruits children as prospective Demon Subduing Captains. Entry into Chaotian Capital and eventual service in the Bureau are seen as opportunities for safety and family honor. 149

Recruits are cut off from family contact, including letters and visits, because the Bureau considers emotional attachments a potential source of hesitation when fighting Evil Spirits. 149

Heavenly Fortune Orchid Festival

The Heavenly Fortune Orchid Festival is marked throughout Great Shang with distinctive public decorations. 123

  • Orchids placed at household doors. 123
  • Red strings threaded with Great Shang coins hung from windows. 123
  • Purple bell-bearing orchids, colorful towers, lanterns, and purple ribbons decorating streets and trees. 123

Legacy

  • The Three Sages are remembered as Great Shang’s saviors during its darkest era. 207
  • Shen Jiangxing preserved the nation through the Yin Tide by creating the Yang Yao Imperial Array. 192 194
  • Ning Xiu was later granted the title Business Saint, with his Golden Body enshrined in the Imperial Ancestral Temple to receive the people’s offerings. 215
  • Great Shang’s eventual recovery of all thirty-six prefectures fulfilled the long-cherished goal of generations of Demon Subduing Bureau members. 217
