East Sea Coast.
The Figure in Black and the Old Woman in Animal Hide traveled through the various Human Tribes.
The old woman carried a cloth sack on her back.
Whenever they arrived at a tribe,
she would take out needles ground from hard bones and threads woven from Ancient Silkworms, then explain how to make clothing to cover the great portions of the body—and even the private parts—that were left exposed without restraint.
The purpose of making clothes
was to ward off the harm of mosquitoes, snakes, and scorpions.
They could keep people warm through long, cold nights.
They could better protect one's body and hair. The Human Race should also wear the garments of shame and propriety, rather than exposing their bodies like mindless beasts.
Whenever the old woman arrived,
the children would be delighted.
That was because the old woman called Zi would tell them stories of other tribes. She would also weave beautiful cotton-padded jackets and clothes for them. Not only were they warm to wear, but they were also beautiful, making many people in the tribe green with envy.
Thus,
many children would gather around Zi.
They listened to her stories.
They learned some weaving techniques.
Even some of the women in the tribe would come over to learn these weaving skills.
Whenever the men of the tribe returned from hunting,
those unwanted animal hides could be processed and woven into beautiful fur coats.
Unfortunately,
the men of the tribe did not enjoy joining in such excitement.
Some even believed that weaving animal-hide coats and wearing them were things only women should do, while real men ought to wear nothing at all and show off their muscles.
