Background / History

Han Aimin returns to the 985 Factory in 1987 after a fall, waking with injuries to his elbows and knees amid worried colleagues. The date on Zhong Jianyu's blackboard notice—March 6, 1987—along with the familiar school routine convinces him that he has returned to the past rather than merely dreamed it 644.

The 985 Factory is the workplace he had longed for after being laid off and forced to wander. His overriding goal upon returning is to change both his life and his destiny 156.

His first urgent concern is Huang Haishan, his eldest sister's husband. Huang's promotion from acting cadre to formal cadre is nearly complete when a hook breaks while he transports two howitzers to the train station, sending one cannon into a ravine and threatening his career 587.

Despite still being hurt and uncertain whether his circumstances are real, Han leaves his teaching responsibilities to seek Huang out. Remembering that the cannons require test firing before delivery, he heads for the rear-mountain firing range; Zhang Shengbing ultimately takes him there by motorcycle 806.

Personality

Han is strongly family-oriented. Even while disoriented by his apparent return to the past, he resolves that he cannot allow Huang Haishan to be left with regrets, placing his brother-in-law's crisis above his own duties and injuries 208 644.

He is determined to avoid repeating the hardship of his former life, particularly unemployment and displacement. This resolve quickly turns his initial disbelief into action 156.

His sense of responsibility extends to the next generation: he considers helping care for his sisters' children, Jun Jun and Chen Chen, a duty owed in return for the care his sisters once gave him 208.
