This area was almost entirely barren desert. You could count the patches of vegetation on one hand, though most of them were merely cacti.

Everyone in the village, men and women alike, wore white headscarves and tattered robes. They were all extremely poor.

Namu, one of the top eight contestants in the Twenty-First Martial Arts Tournament, was from this village.

As soon as he returned, the villagers gathered around him.

Everyone looked at him expectantly.

A child spoke up. "Big brother, didn't you win the championship?"

Namu was an honest man. He shook his head to indicate that he had not.

Disappointment spread across everyone's faces.

An elder leaning on a white wooden cane lowered his head and sighed. "Our village is finished."

It turned out that the village suffered from an extreme water shortage. Namu had entered the Martial Arts Tournament precisely to win the championship and claim the five hundred thousand Zeni prize, so he could buy water for the village and save them from their desperate plight.

Not winning the championship meant receiving no prize money. No prize money meant no water, and without water, the village had no hope.
