Whoo, I'm flying!
Lin Chen felt like he was flying, soaring through the air in weightless bliss...
"Awesome!"
Lin Chen burst out laughing. The next moment, gravity took hold and his body plummeted rapidly. Before he could even close his wide-open mouth, he had already hit the ground.
He felt no pain at all. The ground was like a thick layer of sponge. Before Lin Chen could come to his senses, a half-human-sized shadow darted out and charged straight at him.
"What a huge rat!"
As the shadow drew near, he saw the giant rat, as if it had been exposed to radiation, and cried out in shock. Instinctively, he leaped, soaring several yards into the air and evading the charging rat.
"Haha! I knew the me in my dreams would know how to fly!"
After landing, he watched the giant rat charge at him again and clenched his hand into a fist. "You beast! You think you can bully me in my own dream? This punch has twenty years of training behind it. Can you take it?"
Bam!
His fist struck the giant rat's head. With a loud thud, it flew backward and slammed into the ground not far away. It twitched slightly, then lay still.
"Ding!"
A clear chime rang beside his ear.
Killed Mutated Rat, Origin +100. Origin: 1100 Martial arts available for enhancement: None!
A system?
Lin Chen froze for a moment, then muttered, "Have I been reading too many system novels lately? Am I even dreaming about systems now?"
"I've already finished fighting. Why haven't I woken up?"
After waiting there for a while, Lin Chen realized he still showed no signs of waking. He frowned slightly, then closed his eyes and shook his head.
But when he opened them again, the same gray, misty path through the woods stretched before him. A gentle breeze brushed past, and Lin Chen felt a faint chill.
"Are dreams really this realistic?"
Lin Chen was utterly bewildered. He pinched himself hard, and a sharp pain immediately shot through him, but the scene before his eyes remained unchanged.
"You've got to be kidding!"
Lin Chen's mouth twitched. He seemed to realize something, so he felt the ground beneath his feet, then ran over to the giant rat and felt its corpse.
"What the hell! I really transmigrated!"
At last, Lin Chen understood. He wasn't dreaming—he had transmigrated. He'd only looked at a little too much study material last night, and now he'd transmigrated. Wasn't that a little too hasty?
"Damn it, I transmigrated, but they didn't even give me the original body's memories. What am I supposed to do?"
Lin Chen had accepted the fact that he'd transmigrated. Back on Blue Star, he'd been all alone, and now he'd merely switched worlds to accumulate study material. But without the original body's memories, wouldn't he be a person with nothing to his name?
Just then, Lin Chen felt a sharp pain in his head. A moment later, a strange memory flooded into his mind.
The original owner was also named Lin Chen, a senior at Qingzhou University. His parents had died in a car accident five years ago, leaving him alone.
With graduation approaching, the original owner had gone looking for a job. By the time he returned to campus, it was already dark. A shadow had attacked him on the path through the woods, and then Lin Chen had transmigrated into his body.
"Same name, and no parents either. At least I don't have to worry about anyone exposing my identity." Lin Chen sighed inwardly and looked at the dead rat nearby. "Whatever the case, I came here and avenged you. From now on, I'm Lin Chen."
"No, wait. I was Lin Chen to begin with!"
Back on Blue Star, Lin Chen had had the same name. Besides, he was only in his twenties, and after merging with the original owner's memories from the past twenty-odd years, they had already become one and the same.
"This world is no simple place!"
Once he'd calmed down, Lin Chen thought back over what had just happened. Whether it was his own leap of several yards or the rat as big as a wolfhound, both showed that this world was no ordinary place.
"Better head back first."
He'd thought it was a dream before, so he hadn't been afraid of anything. Now that he knew he'd transmigrated, he didn't want to kick the bucket right after arriving.
Following his memories, he returned to the dorm. There had once been four people in the room, but now only Lin Chen and one other roommate remained. Judging by the look of things, the other student hadn't come back tonight.
Lying on his bed, Lin Chen thought over everything that had happened that night, as well as the original Lin Chen's memories. He realized that ordinary people knew nothing about the Mutated Rat.
There were plenty of similar rumors online, though most had been proven to be nothing more than hearsay. Now it seemed those online rumors hadn't come from nowhere.
"System?"
Lin Chen hurriedly called out to the system, and its panel appeared before his eyes. But after trying several things, he found that he couldn't communicate with it at all.
"What era is this? It's still a manual, self-service system? Couldn't they at least give me an intelligent system?"
Lin Chen felt speechless. Since he couldn't communicate with the system, he could only figure out how it worked by experimenting.
This was clearly a system for enhancing martial arts. It enhanced martial arts by using Origin, which meant Lin Chen had to practice martial arts and acquire Origin.
"I only got a hundred Origin for killing the Mutated Rat. Why does the system say I have eleven hundred?" Lin Chen frowned slightly. Where had the extra thousand Origin come from?
Unfortunately, there was nothing in his memories about having an extra thousand Origin. Still, Lin Chen knew that he needed to kill creatures like the Mutated Rat to acquire Origin.
As for martial arts...
Lin Chen was an ordinary person with no parents. How was he supposed to get his hands on any?
With no other choice, Lin Chen took out his phone and searched online for information about martial arts. But after searching for a while, the system showed no change at all.
Qingzhou University, the gray, misty path through the woods.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Two figures swept over. When they saw the dead rat on the ground, both of them froze for a moment.
"It's dead?" The young man raised an eyebrow.
"A fist mark. Someone killed it!" The Square-Face Man frowned slightly as he examined the rat's head. "There don't seem to be any registered cultivators at Qingzhou University."
"Someone awakened!"
Almost at the same time, the Square-Face Man and the young man spoke. An unregistered martial artist had killed a Mutated Rat. That could only mean someone had awakened.
"Someone showing up at Qingzhou University at this hour is most likely a student from Qingda." The Square-Face Man's expression turned grave. He then said in a low voice, "We don't need to worry about him for now. First, we have to kill all the Mutated Creatures that escaped. Otherwise, Qingzhou University may become their hunting ground!"
The young man nodded. Qingzhou University was the finest institution in Qingzhou Prefecture. If a large number of students were killed, they would be held responsible.
The Square-Face Man moved his hand, and a device the size of a fingertip sank into the dead rat's body. It was a tracker. They were combat personnel, responsible for fighting; the cleanup department would handle Mutated Creatures that had already been killed.
After finishing this, the Square-Face Man led the young man deeper into the gray mist. A few breaths later, they vanished into it.
"It wasn't a dream!"
Lin Chen woke up in a daze. Looking at the familiar dorm, he finally understood that he really had transmigrated—and could never return to Blue Star.
"I can only take the offline route now."
Thinking back over what he'd found online the night before, Lin Chen sighed inwardly. Online martial arts couldn't be enhanced, and the information was vague and unclear. It was completely useless.
But as for the offline route, Lin Chen's memories didn't seem to contain any useful information either.
