"Anyway," Hermione said indifferently, burying herself in her letter again, "you'll have plenty of chances to ask her out..."

"What if he doesn't want to ask her out?" Ron kept staring at Harry, an unusually shrewd look on his face.

"Don't be stupid,"

Hermione muttered. "Harry's liked her for ages, hasn't he, Harry?"

Harry did not answer.

"Who are you writing a novel to?" Ron asked Hermione, leaning over to read the parchment that had fallen to the floor. Hermione promptly pulled it back up.

"Viktor."

"Krum?"

"How many Viktors do we know?"

Ron said nothing, but he looked odd. They sat in silence for another twenty minutes. Ron finished his Transfiguration essay amid impatient grunts and scribbling and erasing; Hermione steadily wrote to the end of her parchment, then carefully rolled and sealed it; Harry stared into the fire, dearly wishing Sirius's head would appear and give him some advice about girls. But the fire only crackled and burned lower until the glowing embers turned to ash. Harry looked around and realized that only the three of them were left in the room.

"All right, good night," Hermione said, yawning hugely as she headed for the stairs to the girls' dormitory.

"What does she see in Krum?" Ron asked as he and Harry went upstairs.

"Well," Harry said thoughtfully, "I suppose he's older... and he's an international Quidditch star..."

"But apart from that," Ron said, seeming quite annoyed, "I mean, isn't he just a bad-tempered lump?"

"He is a bit bad-tempered," Harry said, still thinking about Cho.

They silently took off their robes and changed into pajamas.

Dean, Seamus, and Neville were already asleep.
