After the song ended, Professor McGonagall stepped forward with a roll of parchment listing all the new students' names.
"Whenever I call your name, put on the Sorting Hat!" Professor McGonagall called out. "Fiey Aisha!"
A little girl ran out from the line and obediently sat on the four-legged stool.
Professor McGonagall placed the Sorting Hat on her head.
A few seconds later, the Sorting Hat shouted, "Ravenclaw!"
The little girl named Fiey Aisha immediately stood up nervously. At Professor McGonagall's nod, she staggered toward the second table on the left, where everyone was clapping for her. That was Ravenclaw Academy's long table.
After Fiey Aisha took her seat, Professor McGonagall called the next young wizard's name.
And so, the Sorting Ceremony proceeded in an orderly manner.
Since the first letter of Linley's surname, Roll, was "R," near the end of the alphabet, it was nearly twenty minutes before Professor McGonagall called his name.
"Lynn Roll!"
Professor McGonagall announced loudly.
Linley stepped forward, sat on the four-legged stool, and let the Sorting Hat be placed on his head.
When he closed his eyes, Linley could hear a faint voice by his ear.
"Difficult, very difficult! I can see that you possess great courage—courage that most Gryffindors cannot match. And you are very talented..."
Linley was not surprised by the Sorting Hat's words. After all, if he had lacked courage, how could he have died in a fire to save a child he had never met before?! But judging by the Sorting Hat's meaning, did it intend to place him in Gryffindor?!
Among Pureblood Family members, aside from the Weasley family, perhaps only Sirius Black had ever been sorted into Gryffindor.
"But I can also see that you possess sufficient loyalty. You would never betray any friend, and when it comes to love, perhaps you are unwaveringly faithful..."
The Sorting Hat continued. This time, it spoke of the Hufflepuff traits Linley possessed. Hearing its assessment of his love life, Linley could not help blushing in embarrassment and annoyance.
Come on, I've been single through both lives. What makes the Sorting Hat so certain about my love life?!
"I can also see that you seem to possess immense wisdom. Whether in learning ability or thinking ability, you surpass the vast majority of Ravenclaws. Yet this is not an inborn ability, but the result of accumulated effort and late blooming..."
This time, the Sorting Hat was speaking of Linley's Ravenclaw traits.
Hearing this, Linley secretly laughed to himself. Having gone through sixteen years of exam-oriented education, his learning ability naturally could not be compared to that of these British young wizards, where slacking off was so commonplace.
Even Ravenclaw, with its strong academic atmosphere, probably could not match how fiercely he had competed in his previous life.
However, although the Sorting Hat could identify his Ravenclaw traits, Linley was certain it would not truly sort him into Ravenclaw.
After all, compared to the traits of the other Houses that he possessed, talent that had merely been cultivated through later effort was probably nothing remarkable.
"Last but not least, I can see your immense ambition. Perhaps you disdain power, but your desire for strength and victory surpasses that of every young wizard I have seen today. You will not be bound by worldly constraints, and to achieve your goals, you may stop at nothing..."
The Sorting Hat's words left Linley silent.
Yes. Just as the Sorting Hat had said, his thirst for victory was impossible to erase.
Born in a mountain village in his previous life, his desire to leave the mountains and rise above others had driven him from beginning to end. He would abandon everything he possessed for a single opportunity, and when a teacher used connections to help a relative, causing him to be eliminated, he had gone to the teacher's home under cover of night and beaten him badly enough to be hospitalized.
Perhaps only those born in the mud truly possessed the most genuine hunger for victory.
In this life, Linley had been born into the Roll Family, one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight Pureblood Families. Yet the desire carved into his bones would not be erased by something as simple as reincarnation.
"Interesting, truly too interesting. You are the most difficult young wizard I have had to choose for in over a decade! You are brave and kind, yet willing to stop at nothing. You possess an extreme desire. You are steadfast and loyal, yet you also have an intelligent mind and calm thoughts. You are like a collection of contradictions. Where should I sort you? You possess the traits of nearly every House, and none of them are weaker than ordinary people's. It is difficult for me to place you in one House while neglecting the other three..."
The Sorting Hat wavered. It had never encountered such a strange young wizard before.
"Slytherin."
Linley spoke hoarsely.
Every trait the Sorting Hat had described was a reflection of his previous life. It was as though, in those brief two and a half minutes, he had relived that short life once more.
Yet whether it was the courage of leaping into the fire, the perseverance during his studies, or the sincerity with which he treated his friends, those had all been only fleeting moments in his brief life.
Only his thirst for victory, the trait that matched Slytherin, had run through his life from beginning to end.
"You wish to go to Slytherin? Very well, very well! After all, you are also a member of the Roll Family. Since that is where your aspirations lie, I shall grant your wish!"
Perhaps Linley's Slytherin traits truly were more pronounced. Perhaps it was because he came from a Pureblood Family. Or perhaps the Sorting Hat truly found it difficult to decide his House. In any case, upon learning Linley's wishes, it agreed to his request without hesitation.
"Slytherin!"
The Sorting Hat shouted loudly.
Opening his eyes, Linley heard thunderous applause from the Slytherin table and saw the somewhat astonished looks on everyone's faces.
When Linley sat down beside the Slytherin table, a new student who had been sorted into Slytherin before him immediately leaned over. "Impressive, Roll! The Sorting Hat took a full two and a half minutes to decide your House. That's truly rare! Oh, right, my name is Irvin Fleury. Nice to meet you!"
Linley nodded. "Lynn Roll. Nice to meet you!"
After saying that, Linley had no intention of continuing the conversation. He turned his gaze toward the High Table.
Those seated at the High Table were all faces Linley had been relatively familiar with in his previous life, except for the professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts.
"That is... Mr. Valison Green?!"
Linley's pupils widened slightly. He had just drawn Mr. Green's Chocolate Frog card on the train, yet now he was seeing Mr. Green himself.
At that moment, Linley caught sight of the Weasley twins out of the corner of his eye. Clearly, they too were surprised that this year's Defense Against the Dark Arts professor was Mr. Green, and their eyes seemed to carry a trace of excitement.
