Chapter 19: End of the Campaign

By the final stages of the surprise raid, Kyle had long exceeded his body's limit due to massive blood loss from being shot and prolonged, high-intensity continuous combat. Once he relaxed, he quickly lost consciousness.

Fury had a few soldiers take Kyle and the rescued girl back to the temporary camp for treatment, while he led the remaining ninety-odd soldiers to continue the raid.

Thanks to the large-scale explosion Kyle had triggered, the large base's defense mechanisms and all organizational systems were already riddled with holes.

Hundreds of surviving German soldiers, having lost their officers' combat command, intended to rescue their injured comrades in the explosion zone. At this moment, facing a fully armed and well-conditioned American unit intervening in the raid, they were instantly defeated.

The battle lasted from late night until five in the morning. As the sky began to lighten with dawn, Fury led his troops to "clear" the large base. Even with such an overwhelming, one-sided battle, they still suffered twenty-seven soldier casualties.

However, the results were astonishing—combined with Kyle's personal achievements, their unit's surprise mission had eliminated approximately 1,200 stationed German soldiers, completely occupying the enemy's large military base.

This was the first time the American army had achieved such a magnificent and impressive record since its inception!

Of course, Kyle knew none of this. He slept for a full week after losing consciousness.

When he finally woke up, it was already the morning of the eighth day.

Kyle opened his eyes to find himself lying on a large white hospital bed. His left shoulder was bandaged from his shoulder down to his waist, an IV tube was connected to his wrist, and various medical instrument probes were attached to his bare upper body.

Just one gunshot wound, is it really that exaggerated?

Kyle gave a wry smile, realizing he had been unconscious for a long time. After all, during his period of unconsciousness, his mind had been trapped within the Card Space.

However, he now felt full of energy, and his body should have recovered about seventy to eighty percent.

He pulled off the IV and instrument probes, then pressed his left shoulder wound with his hand. He could still feel a faint pain. He leaned back comfortably against the headboard.

The tables on either side of the bed were filled with flowers and fruit. A gentle breeze stirred the gauze curtains, and through the window, he could see a blue sky and green forests and grasslands. The environment outside was quiet and peaceful.

"Where was I transported to?" Kyle was bewildered. This was clearly not a front-line combat zone or a training base.

But it didn't matter where he was. As long as he was alive and well, that was all that mattered.

Kyle, with his astonishing capacity for acceptance, felt a pang of hunger. He immediately picked up an apple from the table and bit into it, the crunching sound alleviating his hunger.

As Kyle picked up the third apple, the hospital room door suddenly opened. He looked up instinctively, biting into the apple in his hand.

His gaze was met with breathtaking beauty.

Before Kyle's eyes appeared an exquisite face as beautiful as an angel. Her large eyes were clear and blue, her lips were tender and pink, and her curly, golden hair cascaded over her shoulders.

The girl wore a sky-blue, knee-length dress. Her immature body outlined graceful curves, and her arms, exposed to the air, were slender and fair.

This was the second top-tier European-style beauty Kyle had seen since his rebirth. The first was Carter from the training base, but Carter exuded a more mature and cool beauty, whereas the girl before him possessed a more captivating and lovely charm.

Seeing Kyle biting into an apple, the girl was momentarily stunned, then excitedly called out towards the door like a startled rabbit, "Doctor, doctor! Kyle's awake!"

"So it's her." Kyle was taken aback. Hearing the familiar voice, he recognized the girl he had rescued from the German base.

It had been too dark that night, and he hadn't seen clearly. Moreover, the girl's face had been pale and bloodless due to weakness, and she had been bound very miserably. Compared to now, she was like a different person.

"Hey, hey, you can't eat apples like that, you have to peel them." After notifying the doctor, the girl quickly returned to the room and snatched the half-eaten apple from Kyle's hand.

"Why are you here..." Kyle started to ask, then realized he'd asked the wrong question. He quickly corrected himself, "Um, where am I?"

The girl replied, "We're at the First Military Hospital in the United States, in New York. You were rescued at the temporary base on the front lines. After your condition stabilized, you were transported here by a transport plane for rehabilitation."

"So that's how it is," Kyle nodded thoughtfully.

"You don't know, that bullet didn't just hit your left shoulder; it was less than a few centimeters from your heart. You really scared me during the rescue. Fortunately, your physique is very strong and excellent," the girl said, moving closer to Kyle and reaching out to adjust his white bandages.

"What are you doing?" Kyle looked at her in surprise. At this distance, he could faintly smell the fragrance of her golden hair.

"Helping you change your bandages. My parents are both doctors and nurses, so I'm quite skilled at these little things." As the girl spoke, a hint of sadness appeared on her delicate face.

Kyle understood. Since she was a captive, her family and friends in her hometown had likely been shot by the invading German army.

Sensing the atmosphere turn somber, Kyle forced himself to change the subject, "That, that, I didn't expect... you know how to take care of people."

"Of course. You have to understand, what I risked my life to save from the enemy base wasn't just a bundle of supplies."

The girl stuck out her tender pink tongue, and perhaps recalling the night she was tied to Kyle's back, a blush appeared on her face. "Also, I have a name—Lucy Jane, you can call me Lucy."

"Got it," Kyle smiled, allowing Lucy to gently and skillfully change his wound dressing.

Soon, a doctor, who was also the deputy director, hurried into the room to examine Kyle's injuries.

"Doctor, how is he?" Lucy asked nervously.

"He's fine," the responsible doctor replied with a smile, adjusting his glasses as he spoke to Kyle. "I truly didn't expect it. For injuries that would normally keep someone bedridden for a month, you've basically recovered in just a week. In about three more days, you can officially be discharged."

"Three more days," Kyle shrugged helplessly. What others considered a top-tier physique felt incredibly weak to him.

After confirming his injuries were not serious, the doctor left the room, leaving behind a parting message: "Oh, right. A military officer asked me to notify him once you woke up. I've already called him, and he should be here for a visit soon."

A military officer visiting?

Kyle scratched his head. It wasn't hard to guess; he knew fewer than ten officers, and only one or two he was close to.

A moment later.

When the officer knocked and entered the room, Kyle wore an expression of complete prediction, but he still feigned surprise as he asked, "Captain Joseph, why are you here?"

That's right, the officer who came to visit him was the combat instructor at the training base who had given Kyle several Green Cards for physical attributes.

"You rascal, why wouldn't I be here!"

Captain Joseph laughed and scolded him without any pretense of authority. However, upon seeing Lucy in the room, he coughed and straightened up, adopting a serious demeanor. "Oh, it seems there's family here?"

Peeling an apple, Lucy shyly lowered her head, not refuting him.
