Background / History

Recruitment and Early Rivalries

The Demon Race’s Heavenly Court controls the stars, while the Witch Clan rules the mountains and rivers below. Their competing spheres of power produce repeated clashes and mutual slaughter 13.

Dijun attempts to strengthen his court by recruiting the Three Pure Ones. They refuse, and Yuanshi openly insults the Demon Race’s origins, provoking Taiyi’s anger. Fuxi and Nuwa subsequently accept Dijun’s invitation and receive their imperial titles 12.

After Jieyin and Zhunti join East King Duke’s Immortal Court, Dijun recruits Kunpeng as Demon Teacher. His offer includes assistance in seizing Hongyun’s Primordial Violet Qi, tying Kunpeng’s personal ambitions to the court’s expansion 22 23 67.

War with the Purple Mansion Immortal Court

Both courts seek to become the Primordial World’s overlord. Their rivalry escalates into frequent battles and heavy casualties; shortly before open war, the Demon Race kills a Purple Mansion Quasi-Saint 48 60 67.

Ao Guang secures a defensive alliance with Dijun against Purple Mansion aggression. Dijun promises protection and dispatches Ji Meng to reinforce the East Sea Dragon Clan 67.

Following Purple Mansion’s declaration of war, Dijun and Taiyi lead billions of demon soldiers into battle. Jieyin and Zhunti abandon their allies and remove the Purple Mansion Three Prefectures and their inhabitants. Jidu’s appearance briefly halts the fighting before Hongjun intervenes 76 78 79 84 85.

East King Duke dies, and the Immortal Court collapses. Its surviving immortals either defect to the Demon Race or resume independent cultivation. The victory greatly increases the Demon Race’s influence and alarms the Ancestral Witches 86 87.

Nuwa’s Sainthood and the Heavenly Marriage Dispute

Nuwa’s creation of humanity brings her to sainthood. Dijun and Taiyi regard her ascension as an opportunity to unify the Primordial World, while the Witch Clan considers reducing confrontations with the newly strengthened Demon Race 88.

Dijun later arranges a Heavenly Marriage with Xi He. Qin Mu intervenes at the Taiyin Star, battles the escorting Yao Gods, and kills Ying Zhao. Taiyi brings reinforcements, but Qin Mu receives support from Zhenyuanzi, Interception Sect disciples, Xing Tian, and Kuafu 144 145 149 152.

Nuwa and Tongtian intervene, and the Demon Race ultimately withdraws. Qin Mu leaves with Xi He and Chang Xi. Nuwa compensates Dijun by marrying the Seven-Colored Divine Phoenix to him, allowing him to obtain Heavenly Marriage merit and advance to Sub-Saint 263 300.

Human Blood and the Human-Yao War

Blood Fang discovers that human heart’s essence blood can give weapons the ability to breach Witch Clan physiques. Bai Ze captures humans and an Earth Witch for testing, and Dijun confirms the method with an ordinary Houtian Spirit Sword 162 163.

Fuxi warns that harvesting humans could provoke Nuwa and Taishang. Kunpeng proposes covert captures and the use of the Zhou Tian Star Dou Great Formation to conceal heavenly secrets. Entire human tribes subsequently disappear 163 167.

Taiyi eventually considers the covert operation too slow and orders open, large-scale slaughter to collect blood for Witch Slaying weapons. After learning that Saints face restrictions on direct intervention, Dijun becomes more confident in continuing the project 198 204.

Huang Tian rallies tens of millions of human cultivators and attacks the Heavenly Realm through the South Heaven Gate, supported by Xuandu, Zhao Gongming, Xing Tian, and Zhenyuanzi. Hongjun’s decree ends the war, leaving both sides with heavy losses 205 206 207 214.

Human elites killed in battle are later resurrected through the Underworld, while the fallen Yao Gods and demon soldiers remain dead. Dijun views this disparity as Qin Mu favoring humanity and grows increasingly resentful 237 300.

Internal Strife and Dragon Clan Campaigns

The Demon Race attempts to subjugate the Four Seas Dragon Clan. Candle Dragon intervenes, defeats its senior combatants, and ultimately forces the expedition to return without success 269 274 275 319.

Meanwhile, Kunpeng creates the Demon Script and earns enough merit to reach Sub-Saint. Dijun and Taiyi covet his merit and attack him; the ensuing internal conflict drives Kunpeng to defect to the Western Teachings 293 609.

Dijun later attains sainthood through Primordial Violet Qi, Fortune, and blood-sacrifice power. His ascension emboldens the Demon Race to conquer other races. He selects the Dragon Clan as his next target, seeking revenge for its earlier refusal to submit 315 316 318 319.

Taiyi leads the renewed invasion and gains the upper hand against Candle Dragon. Ao Guang seeks Qin Mu’s assistance, bringing the Demon Race into a direct confrontation with its longstanding enemy 320 323.

Imperial Deaths and the Witch-Demon War

Qin Mu kills Taiyi with a single sword strike and subsequently kills Saint Dijun with the Destruction Divine Spear. The army’s morale collapses, and its members fear that the loss of both emperors will shatter the race’s Fortune 328 334.

The Witch Clan exploits the crisis by attacking the Heavenly Realm. Fuxi assumes command, deploys the Zhou Tian Star Dou Great Formation, and receives the Seven-Colored Divine Phoenix’s support 336.

Di Yi, a Heavenly Dao controller from a previous epoch, resurrects Dijun. The restored Saint returns to the South Heaven Gate and devastates the attacking witches with Solar True Fire; Hongjun’s intervention prevents Zhurong and Chi You from being killed 341 345 519.

The later decisive Witch-Demon War ends with Dijun and the Ancestral Witches perishing together. Di Yi does not revive Dijun again because Hongjun and Yang Mei have targeted him. Both races lose almost all their high-end combat power and fall into decline 374 402 519.

Postwar Remnants

The Heavenly Realm becomes ruined and desolate. Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti attempt to claim the Demon Race treasury, only to find it empty with a message identifying Qin Mu’s visit 374.

Humanity replaces the Witch and Demon races as the Primordial World’s dominant population. Nevertheless, survivors such as the Bloodwing Eagle King remain active, and later demons include the Seven Monsters of Mount Mei 375 388 402 470 710.

Demon interests also persist in later conflicts. Yang Jian leads 36,000 demon soldiers from Plum Mountain against the Heavenly Court, while the Nine-Tailed Fox hopes that wider disorder and sect casualties will benefit the Demon Race 749 834.

Appearance

The Demon Race has no single physical form. Its members include hybrid beasts, multi-headed creatures, and animal spirits capable of humanoid presentation or enlarged battle forms 78 710 711.

Zhou Tian Star Dou Great Formation

  • Concealment: Kunpeng proposes using it to hide heavenly secrets surrounding human abductions 163.
  • Defense: Fuxi deploys it to protect the Heavenly Realm against the Witch Clan after the emperors’ deaths 336.

Human-Blood Weapon Refinement

  • Human heart’s essence blood enables otherwise ordinary weapons to penetrate Witch Clan bodies 162 163.
  • Ordinary human blood fails the initial test; heart’s blood is the necessary ingredient demonstrated in the experiment 162.
  • Obtaining sufficient material drives the court’s abduction and massacre campaigns, provoking the Human-Yao War 198 204 207.

Demon Script

  • Kunpeng creates a writing system after observing the Heavenly Dao merit awarded to Cangjie for human characters 609.
  • Its creation earns Kunpeng merit and raises his cultivation to Sub-Saint; the emperors’ attempt to seize that benefit causes internal conflict 609.

Collective Power and Formations

  • Linked altars channel power and Fortune into a main altar during preparations for Dijun’s sainthood; blood-sacrifice power subsequently pours into him 309 315.
  • The Mount Mei Formation transfers six demons’ power into the white ape and draws upon local earth veins, temporarily elevating him to the Zenith Heaven realm 711.

  • Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun — Kunpeng and other demons drive Hongyun to self-destruction while pursuing his Primordial Violet Qi. Zhenyuanzi’s resulting grudge leads him to support the race’s enemies 145 152 207.
  • Western Teachings — Opportunistically benefit from eastern wars and later receive Kunpeng after his defection 86 316 609.
  • Di Yi — Secretly supports Dijun’s sainthood and resurrects him once, but cannot repeat the intervention after the final Witch-Demon War 519.
  • Hongjun — Ends the Human-Yao War by decree and later intervenes against resurrected Dijun to save Ancestral Witches 214 345.

Trivia

  • Demon Race here refers to 妖族, also translated as Yao Race. It is distinct from Luohu’s Devil Race: Jidu’s appearance frightens the Demon Race and interrupts its battle with Purple Mansion 84 85.
  • Yuanshi’s description of demons as “beasts with fur and horns, born from moisture and eggs” expresses his prejudice toward their origins, not a formal cultivation classification 12.
  • Humanity’s postwar leaders deliberately establish the Human Emperor Realm to preserve their civilization and avoid repeating the collapse of the Witch and Demon races 388.
