Appearance
- As Hongjun’s attendant: A young boy in plain robes, with delicate features and lingering immaturity. While carrying Hongjun’s will, he appears majestic despite his youthful appearance 213.
- Before his rebellion: Wears white clothing; has a handsome face, a faint clear radiance, and a pure, gentle aura 582.
- As Heavenly Emperor: Wears a Nine Dragons Imperial Robe and a twelve-tasseled Heavenly Emperor crown 752 872.
- Saintly dharma avatar: An immense imperial figure standing between heaven and earth, wearing emperor’s robes and a flat-topped crown, with a majestic face and blazing gaze 674.
Personality
Haotian initially relies heavily on his connection to Hongjun. At the Underworld entrance, he treats Yunxiao arrogantly and demands to see Qin Mu, but becomes respectful when confronted with Qin Mu’s overwhelming presence. He leaves the meeting relieved and eager to return to Zixiao Palace 290 291.
His resentment centers on the Heavenly Emperor’s throne, which he believes should have belonged to him. Although ambitious, he understands the danger of opposing Qin Mu: he conceals his intentions behind the image of an indifferent official and accepts the Western Saints’ proposal only after weighing their protection against the risks 591 600.
As an independent ruler, Haotian becomes increasingly authoritarian. He responds to Yang Jian’s rescue attempt with a massive military deployment, threatens his nephew with death, and refuses to retreat from Chi You even when the battle turns against him 733 752 761.
Self-preservation eventually outweighs his pride. Following Yaochi’s advice, he accepts subordination to Qin Mu’s forces rather than continue between two stronger factions. His later defiance of Jieyin and Zhunti reflects confidence in Qin Mu’s support, not a return to independent rivalry 819 820 872 874.

History
Hongjun’s Envoy
Haotian enters the Human–Yao war carrying Hongjun’s edict. His arrival interrupts the clash between Taishang’s avatar and Dijun, and he orders the Yao Race to retreat and the Human Race to return to Earth. Both sides comply with the prohibition on large-scale conflict 213.
On a later mission to the Underworld, his position as Hongjun’s attendant does not grant unrestricted access. A ghost general bars his entry, and Yunxiao rebukes his disrespect toward Qin Mu. After receiving an audience, Haotian departs under considerable pressure 289 290 291.
Rebellion Against the Heavenly Court
Haotian and Yaochi join the Heavenly Court at Qin Mu’s invitation, but Haotian remains dissatisfied with his nominal position. Yuanshi pressures him into secretly undermining the court’s Fortune, while Jieyin and Zhunti supply a concrete plan: establish a Western Heavenly Court to rival Qin Mu’s rule 585 590 591 600.
Haotian recruits officials in secret, particularly during Emperor Venerate’s seclusion. Ling Weizi exposes the conspiracy, prompting Haotian to declare his departure openly. Emperor Venerate strikes him down, but Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti intervene and support the rebels’ withdrawal 598 600 601 602 603 604.
Founding the Western Heavenly Court
The Three Saints create an immortal court in the Western Realm. Haotian declares himself its lord, merges with its Fortune, and advances to Sub-Saint. He immediately considers dismantling the Eastern Heavenly Court as a route to greater Fortune and eventual Sagehood 607 608.
Qin Mu deliberately refrains from crushing the new court because its establishment may involve the Heavenly Dao’s workings and significant karma. Haotian instead attempts to strengthen his reputation through a grand celebration, inviting Saints and major powers 612 614 615 617.
The celebration ends in humiliation: the Western Heavenly Court loses all three duels against its Eastern counterpart. On Yuanshi’s advice, Haotian asks Hongjun to make the Saints send disciples to support his undermanned court 624 629 630 637.
Investiture of the Gods and Sagehood
Hongjun places the Investiture of the Gods under Haotian’s management. Haotian plans to exploit the calamity by killing Eastern Heavenly Court immortals and gods, weakening his rival while increasing his own court’s strength. He also proposes controlling the Human Emperor to obtain the Human Race’s Fortune and recruits outside sects 633 637 638 639.
Despite these gains, Haotian recognizes that the Three Saints treat him as a puppet. The appearance of Primordial Violet Qi offers a path toward independence through Sagehood. He fights the Five Emperors during the contest for it, but ultimately receives the strand through Hongjun’s intervention 652 655 658 663 669.
After a thousand years of refinement, Haotian becomes a Saint and proclaims the Western Heavenly Court the rightful orthodoxy of the Three Realms. His ascension attracts additional forces to his court 671 674.
Peach Mountain Conflict
Haotian, Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti plan to use Peach Mountain as a killing trap for Qin Mu, combining Heavenly Court law with Saintly power. When Yang Jian announces his intention to rescue his mother, Haotian mobilizes one hundred thousand heavenly soldiers and generals alongside the Ten Immortal Lords 721 733.
His incarnation overwhelms Yang Jian and his allies, but Chi You intervenes. Haotian then calls upon the Western Saints’ incarnations; Huang Tian overturns their advantage, and Qin Mu’s arrival exposes the disparity between Haotian’s claimed authority and Qin Mu’s actual control of the Three Realms 752 754 755 762 764 766.
Haotian falls during the confrontation with Qin Mu. He subsequently returns alive and demands an account from Taibai Venus of what happened during his “death”; the supplied passages do not explain his restoration 769 777.
Submission to Qin Mu
As the calamity spirals beyond his control, Haotian grows disillusioned with his nominal supremacy. Yaochi advises him to side with Qin Mu rather than the Primordial Heavenly Demon, and he visits the Underworld to offer support for Great Shang against Western Qi 818 819 820.
Yin Tianzi rejects an equal alliance and requires Haotian’s court to submit to Emperor Venerate. Haotian agrees, transferring Fortune into the Interception Sect’s combined Fortune Golden Dragon. His first assignment is to declare the Investiture of the Gods a forgery and denounce Western Qi as traitorous rebels 820.
Break with the Western Saints
With Qin Mu’s assistance strengthening his foundation, Haotian rejects Jieyin and Zhunti’s demand for the Western Fortune. He withstands Zhunti’s attack through the Haotian Mirror and court array, but their combined assault nearly overwhelms him before his jade talisman activates Qin Mu’s intervention 872 873 874.
Haotian subsequently brings the Western Heavenly Court to the Eastern Heavenly Court’s South Heaven Gate. He presents his mirror, imperial seal, and thirty percent of the Western Lands’ Fortune. Emperor Venerate accepts the submission and names him Western Gouchen Supreme Palace Great Emperor, first among the Four Imperials. The courts merge, while the loss of the Western foundation devastates Jieyin and Zhunti’s remaining power base 878.
