The steam locomotive belched thick black smoke. Its massive machinery churned, unleashing tremendous power as it pulled the train onward.
This steam train was different from the usual kind. It looked like a steel serpent, a monstrous beast. Not only were its carriages packed with armed soldiers and Investigation Department elites, but several of its flatcars carried enormous cannons, completely exposed.
It looked like a machine born solely for war.
In the foremost carriage, Director Barton sat with several generals, all of them grim-faced.
"So... something like this really happened? A massive tidal wave struck? The trading nation of Arkham was even wiped out completely... And you're saying this was all because an Ancient Being woke up... and it's our ally?"
General Hansen had fought in numerous campaigns and was practically a God of War to the Federation. Even so, after hearing Director Barton's account, he couldn't help gaping in shock.
"I know it's hard to believe, but it really is our ally... What's even more tragic is that the battle deciding the world's fate is being fought on our own soil, and all we can do is handle the sidelines... disaster relief, or hunting down the remaining followers..."
"Damn it! Why does something like this exist in the world?"
General Hansen slammed his fist on the table. Blood seeped out through the cracks in his knuckles.
"Since the world is at fault, all we can do is accept it..."
Director Barton's face was full of helplessness. "We're almost at the border. I hope things aren't too bad..."
Through the window, he could already see a huge sun suddenly appear in the darkened Sky Curtain. Its dazzling light reached him even beyond the mountains, and he could feel its warmth.
