"I'm not going anywhere for the next few days. I'll just look around town. Oh, and I've been thinking about getting a dog."

Angelica laughed.

"Since when did you become so caring?"

"I've always been caring, okay?"

She made it sound as though Li Dan were some kind of monster. He'd wanted a dog for ages; he just hadn't had the chance.

He planned to ask Pete whether there were any other dogs of Brian's breed. He wanted a female.

Li Dan figured it was worth asking. He remembered an episode where Brian's mother had appeared, but that proved nothing. She might have been an exception.

With that on his mind, Li Dan lost all interest in cuddling. He kissed Angelica, got dressed, and went out.

Li Dan called Pete.

"Pete, do you have time? There's something I'd like to come ask you about."

"Oh, come to the bar. Old Joe, A-Q, and Cleveland all want to meet you," Pete slurred. Li Dan could picture his drunken expression even over the phone.

Li Dan hung up. Pete spent six days out of every week at the bar and barely ever went to work.

Unless something major came up that he absolutely had to handle.
