Infection by an Unknown Virus

Li Dan watched the old police chief hesitate, wanting to step forward and help her up before stopping himself. He had no idea what to say.

If nothing else, the blood smeared around the old woman's mouth was hardly normal.

But how had a zombie appeared in an otherwise ordinary apartment building? REC hadn't explained that.

Perhaps it had, but he didn't remember much of it.

Seeing everyone's attention turn to him, Li Dan spoke plainly.

"You'd better stay away from her."

His words struck like a thunderclap. The old police chief shuddered and almost instinctively stumbled three steps backward, slamming his back into the wall with a dull thud.

He had already sensed something was wrong, but years of professional habit had made him instinctively want to help.

Now that Li Dan had pointed it out, the last shred of hope in his heart vanished without a trace.

"Then... what should we do now?" The old police chief swallowed, all composure gone from his voice.

Angela moved two steps closer, gripping her microphone tightly. Her professional instincts wouldn't let her miss a single detail.

She was about to ask about the situation—who the old woman was and what had just happened—but before she could speak, the old woman on the floor suddenly moved.

Her unfocused eyes instantly turned scarlet, like coals flaring to life, and a piercing shriek burst from her mouth.

The sound was nothing a human could have made. It was more like the roar of some wild beast.

She abruptly pushed her upper body off the floor, astonishing strength surging through her scrawny arms as she lunged at the old police chief, who was closest to her.

"Watch out!"

Manu, the firefighter, cried out and reached for the old police chief, trying to pull him away.
