First, only a Divine Craftsman could forge metal with complete sentience—or, in other words, turn it into a true living being.

Anything that possessed sentience became an intelligent lifeform, such as humans and Soul Beasts.
Spirituality, on the other hand, was different. Though it was also life, it never possessed intelligence and could only become a plaything of sentient beings, like cats and dogs raised by humans, or wild beasts.
Second, merging a corresponding soul into the Heavenly Dao Battle Armor could also grant it sentience.
