They found an opportunity to raise the questions in their hearts with the weary-faced commander.
"General, the types of creatures attacking us seem fixed, and they seem like—" Benjamin weighed his words. "—like some kind of mass-produced cannon fodder units?"
The commander gave Benjamin a somewhat surprised look, apparently not expecting this "technical consultant" to have noticed that.
He nodded, his tone grave. "That's right. These are all expendable vanguards. The real trouble is the Blue Devils' main force behind them—those with greater intelligence, piloting strange vehicles. They are the true commanders and difficult opponents."
"Blue Devils?" Rex keenly caught that term. "Do you have any specimens or captives we could study?"
"Well, their skin is blue, hence the name. We've recovered some wreckage, but not much. They seem to have some kind of self-destruct mechanism, or their companions retrieve them in time. It's difficult to obtain intact research samples." The commander shook his head. "We don't have any ready-made wreckage on hand right now."
Benjamin and Rex found that somewhat regrettable.
Over the next few days, they behaved unusually "well."
They made no further requests to enter dangerous areas, merely using the observation data provided by the base for analysis.
Occasionally, under absolute protection, they gathered environmental data around the outskirts of the base.
It was not that Benjamin and the others did not want more data. They simply knew very well that, reduced to the state of ordinary people as they were now, rashly stepping onto the battlefield would be no different from courting death.
Their "cooperation" and "professionalism" won the commander's favor, and the level of vigilance gradually dropped.
He even specially arranged for an experienced, well-equipped squad to escort them to an area relatively close to the front line, where a small-scale clash had just occurred,
