A traditional arena tournament simply could not fairly reflect their true capabilities.

In an instant, an enormous invisible boundary—yet one every wizard could clearly sense—was drawn out, forming a gigantic circular area over a thousand kilometers in diameter.
This was the "stage" for the competition.
The rules were extremely simple: all contestants would be randomly placed within this area, and the melee would begin.
There were no allies, and no restrictions other than the prohibition against deliberately killing anyone. The last person still standing within the area would be the victor and claim the coveted Substitute Doll.
This format was indeed somewhat disadvantageous to positional-warfare wizards who needed time to lay down large-scale spell arrays and construct permanent fortifications.
