Chapter 491: Battlefield Changes
Having just arrived at the edge of the Noren Workshop's defensive perimeter, the Magic Network Terminal on Benjamin's wrist gave a faint vibration.
Benjamin glanced at it. An emergency order was displayed: [All outer reconnaissance personnel are to return to the fortress complex immediately. Cease all external operations.]
His steps paused slightly before he continued onward.
Before long, the sight of the camp ahead entered his view.
The scene beyond the defensive line was completely different from when he had left. Black smoke rose everywhere, elemental fluctuations bore unnaturally twisted traces, and the air still carried the scorched stench of heated energy.
Even more shocking, several enormous overlapping craters had appeared out of nowhere across the once-flat wasteland.
Each spanned anywhere from dozens to over a hundred kilometers in diameter. The lava around their edges had not yet fully solidified, and dark-red light pulsed slowly at the bottom of the pits.
The large detection arrays and outposts that had previously been extended beyond the defensive line had now become ruined wreckage, leaving only twisted metal frames and curling smoke.
"The scale of this destruction..." Benjamin's expression turned grave.
Damage of this level could never have been caused by the harassing attacks of the past few days.
Clearly, while he had been out conducting reconnaissance, an extremely intense clash had erupted on the main battlefield.
He displayed his Magic Network Terminal code to the identification array at the outer layer of the defense line, and an entrance silently opened in the pale-golden barrier.
Passing through layer after layer of energy screens, the closer he came to the center of the fortress complex, the more obvious the traces of war became: armor plates under repair, wizards hurrying past, and the peculiar mixed scent of potions and energy permeating
